The pit bike of choice this year seems to be Honda's cool, Euro-style Scoopy scooter, which is powered by a 50cc envirofriendly four-stroke motor. The scooter, which will actually be called the Metropolitan here in the U.S .. is being used by all of the Honda teams In the SX series, and you can expect to see it at the U.S. Superbike Series as well. David Yuillemin looked as strong at Anaheim II as he had at Anaheim I and San Diego, but he felt lucky just to be racing. "I did not exp_ect to race this weekend because Sunday after San Diego, I pulled my knee out at the gym," the Frenchman told Cycle News photographer Steve Bruhn. "I went back to France to see my osteopath and came back the next day. i could not walk Tuesday, so I was really happy to race - and to get second piace was great. .. Anaheim II boasted a sell-out crowd of 45,050, and it included several notable spectators of both the motorcycling and the non-motorcycling variety. The former group included 125cc World MX champ James Dobb and 500cc GP road racer Max Biaggi. The latter group included Richard Childress Racing Winston Cup NASCAR driver Robbie Gordon. The Escondido Police Dept. was dispiaying a couple of KTM LC4 640 police bikes in the pits at Anaheim II. The bikes are basically stock dual-sporters, although Santee-based ThunderWorks performs all the necessary modifications to make them meet Title 13 regulations for emergency vehicies (mainly black-and-white graphics, a siren and the appropriate lighting). "We mainly chose it because it works well enough on the street that it will biow away our Kawasaki street bikes, but you can also take it off· road," said officer Fred Cheatham. who was showing the bikes along with officer Scott Walters. Team Honda's Ernesto Fonseca had hoped to ride at Anaheim II, but the forearm-ligament injury he aggravated dUring practice at San Diego was still not ready. "I don't want to re-injure it or make it worse," said Fonseca, who was sporting an Allen Iverson-esque arm sleeve. "Hopefully, it will be ready next week. " Team SoBe Suzuki clowned around a bit during the rider intro· ductions at Anaheim II: Travis Pastrana wheelied onto stage with I R Upcoming Rounds: Round 4 - Phoenix, Arizona, January 26, 2002 Round 5 - Anaheim, Cal~omia, February 2, 2002 Chad ReedfTravis Pastrana (44); 6. He's now on a Honda, but Carmichael was once again sporting orange gear at Anaheim II. perhaps in an effort to bring better luck than he experienced at the first two rounds. The whoops have been tricky at the first couple of supercross rounds, and the trend continued at Anaheim II, as triple-digit riders were sent to the ground in droves during practice and early quali· fying. The section on the fioor's east side was most difficult. with deep troughs and a changing rhythm. Travis Pastrana showed the most hair here, leaping far into the section for much of the night. "It was really scary jumping into the whoops, jumping in that far," Pastrana confessed. cue rounds): 1. (TIE) Big Tim Dixon, who was an important part of Jeff Emig's nowdefunct TheEdgeSports.com team and has long been a popular presence in the SX pits, has been assisting Clear Channel this season with media relations. "Some of the guys from the local press don't feel comfortable approaching the riders, and the riders might not know who they are," Dixon said. "I know all the team guys, so I'll just escort the journalists into the pits and introduce them, it's a good way for me to stay involved." The Anaheim II track featured a couple of interesting obstacles. One was a whooped-out sand pit after the triples on the west side of the stadium fioor, and it was tricky enough to send Travis Pastrana to the ground in Saturday's 250cc practice. The other was a set of three consecutive plateau jumps on the north end, the first two with lips on the ends. The most popular way through this area was to skip from one to the other. leaping over the gaps in between, A couple of riders. however
