Three of the five factory AMA/Chevy Trucks U,S_ Superbike Series took part in a two-day test session at California Speedway in Fontana, California, January 14-15, with American Honda, Kawasaki and HMC Ducati represented. When all was said and done, it was American Honda's Nicky Hayden leaving the facility with the fastest lap time, though everyone was mostly getting used to the new racetrack that stayed dirty for the majority of the tes!. Hayden clocked a 1:29.2 on his 2002 Honda RC51 with Miguel DuHamel clicking off a 1:29.7 on his 2001-model RC51 on the first day of the test, with Hayden improving to a 1:26.97 on the fmal day. DuHamel also improved to a 1:27.34 to end the test as the second quickest rider, ahead of HMC Ducati's Pascal Picotte and Erion Racing's Kurtis Roberts. Although no one seemed to be overly enamored with the newest racetrack on the schedule, they were in agreement that track management seems eager to please. There is also no denying that the facility itself is first-rate, "The little chicane in turn one is a little Mickey Mouse," Hayden said. "The rest of it is fun. It's not very technical, but it's a lot of work on a superbike, For the most part, I like it. It's a real nice place and hopefully it will be a good race for us." Though the track was dirty and the layout new, Hayden was trying to get some serious testing in on his new RC51 , "I took the morning to get comfortable, but we've been trying some different tires, rim widths". some pretty big changes," Hayden said on the first day, "The track is chewing up tires pretty good, but I don't think it'll be too hard on 'em." DuHamel was also working hard, putting in a ton of laps on his year-old RC51 until his new one arrives, hopefully in time for the Laguna Seca test that was on-going as this issue of Cycle News went to press, "The track is not too difficult, but I wouldn't say it's easy," DuHamel said, "It's really dirty off line right now, I got off line in the chicane and now there's a big black mark down there from my front tire. The only problem I see is with the crossover section down there - the wall is pretty close. These guys are really Willing to work and they're good people, so I think everything will come together. I think it may be tough to pass. There's only really one good passing place. I told Jim [Allen from Dunlop] that I thought this place would be worse on tires than Daytona, but it's not so bad. It's not a Daytona issue_ You'll need hard tires but it won't be as bad as I thought." even-time AMA Supercross Champion eremy McGrath is being featured in three-page editorial feature in the Febuary 2002 issue of Playboy Magazine, hich is available on newsstands now, ccording to his publicist. "When we set up this team, I didn't think for a minute we could have attracted as big a name as Troy Corser for our first season, - Fogarty said in the release. "Everyone knows 2000. Revenue for the quarter was 894.4 million compared with $756.2 The third of the Honda RC51 superbikes ended up in two pieces when Roberts crashed in what you would call turn three, a fast left hander, on the first day of the test. Fortunately, Roberts escaped injury. Unfortunately, the Honda made it all the way to the wall where it met its death - at least for the day. The crash cut Roberts' first day a bit short. "That was the worst one I've ever had as far as messing up a bike," Roberts said. "It sounded like a NASCAR when it hit the wall." As for the track itself, Roberts was his normal candid self. "It sucks, it's stupid and it's boring," he said. "It'll be safe, but there's nothing technical - it's just a bunch of chicanes. It should be good racing. I think the best thing will be to get in the lead and then cut the chicanes - they don't penalize you for cutting chicanes unless you pass someone." HMC Ducati's Pascal Picotte still hasn't got the smile off his face in what is his second encounter with the factory Ducati. That smile was even bigger here than at Daytona, thanks mainly to more help from the factory. "It's much better than Daytona," Picotte said. "We're using smaller throttle bodies now and these guys from Italy understand the telemetry and the geometry of the bike. They know little tricks and they're helping me understand the bike better, The track is really dirty so you can't really go for a banzai lap. The biggest problem right now is that it's hard to get reference points. The cones in tum one are horrible and the transition down there is pretty horrible. There's no kerbing in some spots and the grass runs up to the pavement so it's hard to get reference points. It's not a fast racetrack like I thought it would be. I'm using fifth gear - first, second, third, first, second, third. There's a iot of hard braking, but you still have to carry some speed through the chicanes." Dunlop sent Jim Allen to the test and he was hopeful that Fontana wouldn't end up on his list of tracks that cause him to lose sleep at night. What he discovered is that the California Speedway racetrack likely won't need a special tire developed for it. In addition to the superbikes, all of Erion's men were here - Mike Hale, Jake Zemke, Roger Lee Hayden and Alex Gobert. Additionally, Tommy Hayden and Tony Meiring were testing their ZX-6RRs. Hale was the qUickest of the Formula Xtreme riders, lapping at 1:28.5 on his new CBR954RR. Paul Carruthers lion in 2000, a 15.7 percent increase.
