Rodney Farris Memorial Short Track Series Round 3: Timonium Short Track Mullen Masterful at Timonium Finale By LEN BREECH TIMONIUM, MD, DEC. 15 were certain rules just for this contest. The winner of the prize for the largest sign-up was former District 7 motocross champion Mike Bell, who raised more than $500. The riders were divided into two distinct groups - the serious and topped the Dash For Cash, which riders and the crazies, usually the young pros, who were more concerned with how many hay bales they could destroy or knock out of place, is a five-lap race for the fastest of the timed classes, plus the next-fastest rider. So quick was Mullen's modified Yamaha motocrosser that flat-track- In a series known for the same bike or how long they could keep the 100 crossed up near the bales. Also, riders were not supposed to lead for more than one lap before letting another rider lead - up to the halfway being run in more than one class per night, this has been the first time this point; then anything goes. With 20 riders entered, they let er-turned-motocrosser Paul Allison was fastest 250cc rider and second overall. This posed a minor problem: has happened. Officials let Allison everyone start based on their finish in ride another bike in the Dash For their semi. While the serious riders quickly staged, a few of the crazies Cash. At the start of the final, Mullen put his Team Player Yamaha in front of the current grandmaster of this event, Georgie Price, with Jake Johnson, Joe Zydinsky and Kevin Varnes a few lengths back. Just as he had done at the last final the previous Saturday, Mullen ran an intense 15 laps with took a while because they were too busy checking out their lines for the final. Needless to say, it was a scorer's nightmare, with riders getting lapped before the end of the opening lap. Others were falling while in a Timonium Short Track: Bryan Douglas (1) and Scott Saunders (2X) went one-two in the XR100 Paul Crumling Benefit race at the third and final round of the 25th annual Rodney Farris Memorial Short Track Series in Timonium, Maryland. ners with their plaques. A pair of riders had an excellent chance to win their class on all three nights heading into the final, but they were unsuccessful. First up was Shawn Rothstein in the 125s. He got a dose of his own holeshot medicine as John Lewis V had his ABBA Contractors/Bromley's Suzuki/KTMbacked KTM in front of Rothstein, with Nick Henderson, Isennock and Joseph Schueler right behind. With Rothstein pounding away at him in every turn, Lewis held his line, never giving the faster Rothstein the slightest opening. On the ninth lap, Rothstein tried too hard, falling in the fourth turn. Almost immediately, Isennock moved up from third to try his luck with the former Amateur National 80cc Champion. He even tried passing on the outSide, but he came up short. After taking the lead from Paul Allison, Corey Hormes and Bob Sweeten at the start of the 250cc final, Dillon Cava made sure that Hormes never got close enough to sniff his exhaust. Cava put a few lengths on the field and managed to thread his way through the lappers relatively easily. The same could not be said for Allison, who hit a lapper late in the race and fell hard going into the first turn. Ironically, the bike he hit was the same one he rode in the Dash For Cash. Chris "Crash" Hathaway lived up to his nickname, as he worked his way into fourth and then third in the closing laps, only to fall in the fourth tum with two laps left. Opening-race winner Bryan Bemisderfer took the 400cc-class lead from Rob Smith and Mark Burkholder. After a few laps, Burkholder slipped into the lead entering the third turn on lap seven. Smith slipped into second off the fourth turn with three laps left, making the top three all winners during the series.
