CMC Northwest Winter Arenacross Series Round 5: Forster Livestock Pavilion tion to score a narrow win. Leach, who is becoming more familiar with the Italian marque since contesting one full time, finished a close second, followed by Stephen Blaine and Tristan Versteeg. eN Robbins -Baskin' in the Limelight (Left) Mitchell Robbins could bask in the limelight after winning four classes at the arenacross doubleheader Inside Forster Livestock Pavilion. Robbins scored the 250cc Junior and Before The HIli Junior overall victories on both Friday and Saturday nights. STORV AND PHOTOS BV CLAV liGHT SALEM, OR, DEC. 13-14 -Ionda-mounted Mitchell Robbins has decimated the competition in the 250cc Junior class at all but one round thus far in the CMC Northwest ' Winter Arenacross Series. Robbins' lone loss came at the series' opener, but since then he's pretty much dominated the class, and he has also been a top contender in the Before The Hill (16-24) class. Robbins scored four overall wins at the weekend doubleheader. Also impressive were brothers Justin and Josh Hill. Although the two only made an appearance on Friday night, they were the dom inant forces in 50cc, 80cc and Supermini action. The youngest of the two riders from LaCenter, Washington, Justin, walloped the competition in the Pee Wee (4-6), 50cc Open and 60cc Beginner classes, riding KTM and Kawasaki machinery to post the only triple win of the evening. Josh, who recently made the switch to Yamaha machinery after spending much of his racing career aboard Kawasakis, went four for four in his routing of the 80cc (12-13) and Supermini classes on Friday. In both classes, he led Kawasaki rider Nathan Whitlow and Yamaha-mounted Aaron McClinton into the top three overall, amassing huge leads in his decimations of the two classes. Yamaha-mounted Ryan Leach and Washington's J.R. Vielle have spent the entire series thus far in close quarters in the 250cc Pro class. Friday night was more of the same, as Vielle got the jump on the field in moto one and for several laps held off the advances from Leach before yielding to the local speedster. Vielle I (Above) Ryan Leach continued his stranglehold on the 250cc Pro class with two wins at round five of the CMC Northwest Winter Arenacross Series. trailed Leach again in moto two to snare second overall, followed by KTM rider Gary Beyer (3-3), who netted third overall, ahead of Kawasaki jockey Eric Roth (4-4). Vie lie, though, was triumphant in the Before The Hill Pro/Intermediate class, putting in a strong ride in the first moto to lead Honda-mounted Ryan Huege at the finish. Vielle darted ahead in moto two and, after another stellar performance, landed the overall win ahead of Huege, KTM rider Pete Sannan and Yamahamounted David Didier. Gared Steinke stormed the 60cc ranks with four moto victories to snag a pair of overall wins in the 60cc Senior (9-11) and 60cc Open classes. As usual, Steinke had the McClinton brothers, Travis and Tyler, to contend with. However, Steinke wasn't to be denied, and he went a perfect four for four. In the 60cc Open class, Tyler placed second to Steinke, while Zach Amelung finished Forster Livostack Pavilion Salom, Oregan Results: Oocombor 13-14, ZOOl (Round 5 of lZ1 Friday P/W (4-6): I. Robbins' first of four overall wins came in the Before The Hill Junior class on Friday. Suzuki-mounted Adam Metzler was Robbins' closest competitor in both motos and landed second overall, ahead of Yamaha rider Nicholas Nowak. Robbins also came out swinging in the 250cc Junior class and, after absconding with holeshots in both motos, the CR pilot turned 1- 1 performances into his second overall win of the evening. Honda-mounted Zach Melton and Yamaha YZ426F pilot Jeremy McLain spent much of both motos in a confrontation for the second-place laurels, some 10 seconds behind Robbins - a position Melton snared. McLain bagged third overall. On Saturday, things were much the same, as Robbins roosted the competition in the class to nab the overall win ahead of four-stroke pilots Jeremy Mickelson and McLain. In the absence of top-three 60cc riders Steinke and Travis and Tyler McClinton, KTM rider Dakota Smith got his turn to shine. Consistently a top-five finisher, Smith smoked the competition in the 60cc Open class after earlier topping the 60cc (6-8) division. Ryan Roberts, who won the earlier 60cc Senior (9-11) class, was Smith's closest competitor, finishing second overall in the 60cc Open class, followed by Kawasaki rider Zack Amelung. Leach and Vielle were back at it again in the combined 250cc Pro/Intermediate contest on Saturday, but - much like he has at nearly every event here this season - Leach prevailed. Vielle finished second, ahead of the top-placing Intermediate riders, Raym Conkey and Joe Brockway, both riding Yamahas. In the crowd-favorite 50cc Husky Challenge race, sponsored by Bill's Motorcycles of Salem, Brandon Barber and a much-improved R.J. Leach went bar to bar for much of the single-moto race. Leach did all he could to keep Barber from posting a win, but the crafty Barber, who has scored two wins thus far in the series, slipped past Leach in the whoop seceye I e n e IN S • JANUARY 16, 2002 29
