Travis Preston won the 125cc main event. and his teammate Chris Gosselaar finished third. while Mike laRocco took runner·up honors in the 250cc class. The team's other member. Michael Byrne, finished fourth in the 250cc main. Not only was this the opening round of the AMAlEA Sports Supercross Series. but it was also the first of three rounds of the Vans Triple Crown. the series within a series. If a rider can win all three rounds and 250cc ($500) main events. respectively. Team ECC's Mike Craig won the Racer X Gas Card money ($250) for finishing third - the first non-transfer position - in the 250cc LCQ. Baseball star Ken GriHey Jr. and his family were on hand to watch their good friend James Stewart's supercross debut. Griffey was also the official starter for Friday's Crossover Challenge that was won by personal watercraft racer Victor Sheldon. Earlier. Stewart, who holds the record for the most Amateur National Championship wins. presented Griffey with his record·breaking motorcycle. which Griffey will display in his game room. Undoubtedly the most successful team at Anaheim was the Amsoil/Dr. Martens/Honda/Factory Connection squad. 12 JANUARY 16. 2002' eye •• n e _ s The rider turnout for Anaheim I was a little on the light side. Only 53 riders checked in for the 250cc class and 67 for the 125cc class. The Thursday prior to the Anaheim race. the Yamaha of Troy team announced the signing of a co-title-sponsorship deal with the Australian·based pre-paid cellular phone card company Boost Mobile. As a result. the official name of the Dayton, Ohio-based team is now Team Boost Mobile/Yamaha/Troy Racing. Boost Mobile is a pre-paid brand phone card business, based out of Australia. "Boost has teamed up with Nextel and is looking to launch its cellular phone/pre-paid phone card service here in the United States in February," the team's manager Phil Alderton said. "And seeing as how Boost has already been involved in motocross racing. along with the fact that Australian Chad Reed is on our team. everything ended up fittIng very nicely." On Friday. Suzuki and SoBe Beverages officially announced their new joint venture. SoSe and Suzuki signed a two-year deal that Will see SoSe be the title sponsor of Suzuki's 250cc factory FYI: The last time Ricky Carmichael didn't win a supercross race was on January 20. 2001. Jeremy McGrath won that race in Anaheim. The last time that neither Carmichael nor McGrath won was on April 15, 2000, when David Vuillemin won in New Orleans. The week before in Dallas. Texas.
