BRIEFLY••• Montclair Yamaha's Ty Davis returned to the WORCS series after having foot surgery. Davis actually competed a week earlier at the Las Vegas 200, where he finished third with teammate Nick Pearson, but his return at Laughlin did not go as well. Davis, riding a Yamaha YZ426F, was running up front when he dropped out of the race on the second lap. "The bike started to make a loud, howling noise," Davis said. "It started sputtering at first and just got worse and worse. It kind of sucked because I was catching Kiedrowski. but I had to pull off and ride back in [to the pits)." Davis mentioned that he'll most likely start riding the VZ250 (two-stroke) In the future. to Laughlin already nicked up. Hatch had crashed a week earlier, damaging tendons in his right hand and injuring his left shoulder. The Suzuki rider endured the pain of both and rode out the race in ninth place. Hatch was far from 100% on the track, but his commitment to his team enabled the Yoshimura Suzuki squad to finish 1-2-3 in the series final standings. Sun (Hbg); 3. Rex Mike (Yam); 4. The super-fast, sandy and very hare & hound"like racecourse was nothing like any of the previous WORCS round events, some of which have been tight and technical. or more wide open woods riding (hare scrambles), or more grand prix-like. or even more motocross~ljke. as was seen at the Las Vegas round. "I liked it [the Laughlin course]," said Brian Garrahan who hails from Northem California and is more custom to woods-type riding. "It was like a desert race and it's good to have varied terrain." Ty Davis liked the course, as well. -It was fun; it's good to ride in the sand and have different courses like this. It was a little dusty, though." "I think it's good to have variety," Mike Kiedrowski said. "It gives riders a chance to excel at whatever they're best at. I mean, at Vegas, I knew I was going to do good there. that was me. But I think it's good to have different terrain; it truly determines who is the best all-around off-road rider. KTM rider Brian Garrahan had all kinds of problems at Laughlin. Garrahan was running as high as fourth early on when he started developing mechanical problems. "The shifter fell off and when that happened, I think a bolt came off and wedged between the Icountershaft] sprocket and the clutch. breaking the clutch mechanism, - Garrahan said. Of course, this all happened at the farthest point from the pits, so Garrahan's tuner had to run out to assist his stranded rider. Garrahan estimates that he lost 15 or so minutes. resulting in his 14th-place finish. KTM's Shane Watts (pictured) came to the final round of the WORCS Series bruised and battered and left even more damaged. Three weeks earlier, Watts crashed while competing in a regional event and broke a couple of ribs, preventing him from riding or training prior to the Laughlin race. During Saturday's team race at Laughlin, Watts bailed and suffered a slight concussion. When Watts crashed again during Sunday's Pfo race, the Australian re-injured his already tender ribs. After the race, Watts could barely walk or even talk; he was in so much pain. "I was happy where I was Ithird In the Pro racel. considering not having trained in three weeks and having a concussion yesterday," Watts said. "I'm just really sore right now and just plain fatigued. But I'll be all right." For winning the Laughlin event, Kurt Caselli took home $5000 from the $10,000 Pro purse. Runner-up Robert Laughlin pocketed $1500 and third-place Mike Kiedrowski earned $500. The remaining $5000 gets distributed down to 20th place. Yamaha rider David Pearson was running as high as fourth place before trying to stretch out on more lap on a tank of gas. Pearson's motorcycle sputtered to a stop and was forced to push his bike back to the pits for more fuel. Unfortunately for him, he was eventually disqualified for not finishing out the lap before entering the pit area. (Top) Kiedrowski can now boast a major off-road title to go along with his multiple National MX Championships. (Left) Pat Garrahan finished out the Laughlin race in fifth place. Perhaps the most frustrated rider at the Laughlin WORCS race was AMA National Hare & Hound Champion Destry Abbott (pictured, right>. The Laughlin terrain suited the desert champ to a tee, but the Kawasaki rider could only watch. Abbott is still healing from injuries he suffered just prior to the previous WORCS round last month. But Abbott didn't just watch, he also talked. Abbott joined regular WORCS announcer Dave Brosus (left) on the announcer's tower, providing color commentary all day. On New Year·s Day, a half-hour show on the WORCS Series will be featured on the program High Octane on Speedvision. It will again be shown on Fox Sports Net two weeks later. Check your local listings. Not only was the Laughlin race unique in that it was held on sand dune-like terrain, but the pits were located within a short walking distance of the Avi Resort and Casino. Racers could gear-up out of the cold in their hotel rooms, have breakfast in the lobby, throw down a few quarters in the slot machines, walk to the pits and then race. If you were riding in muitiple classes, you could even pass the time away between races in the casino or in a restaurant. The event's sign-up was also located In the hotel's lobby. The sandy terrain, however, wasn't a hit with the sportsman riders, so Laughlin won't be on Crossroads Adventure's 2002 schedule. 46 JANUARY 9,2002' cue I e n e _ s
