Ride studded winter tires on Michelin Bib Mousse.
Bradshaw made the unusual choice
of the outside gate pick, which turned
out to be a smart move.)
The track was much larger than in
the average arenacross, which meant
a lot more speed (and some gearing
changes for the teams, which had
shipped their bikes right after the last
round in Worcester, Massachusetts).
Pedro Gonzalez was third twice on
Friday but struggled on Saturday,
while local hero Marc Ristori was the
top European, winning a semi and
finishing third in Saturday's 125cc
main. Ristori's semi victory came
after a hard-fought battle with Chad
Johnson, and it brought the alreadyloud crowd to a frenzy.
The most destructive rider of the
weekend was Tuf Kawasaki's Denny
Stephenson, who destroyed the front
end of his KX250 when he hit a structure built for the scorers, on the finish
tabletop jump. His father/mechanic,
Don Stephenson, replaced the entire
front end, including the triple clamps,
only to have Denny go down again
(in a whoop section) and badly bend
the new handlebar. Fortunately, the
younger Stephenson was okay.
Both nights of the Extreme Jumpoff contest were won by the amazing
Edgar Torronteras, who is easily the
best freestyle jumper in Europe - if
not the world.
The arena cross regulars did some
sightseeing while on the trip. A few
went to a castle in Montreux, but
most just enjoyed the different
atmosphere, searched in vain for
something familiar for dinner, or
saved their hard breadrolls for food
fights with the Europeans after Saturday's races.
