Dutch Sport Park MX: Derek Rose (298) slides to the 5100 holeshot bounty at the final event of the season in Bloomingdale, Michigan; he went on to win the 5Extreme money moto. plenty of gift certificates for the top racers in each class. Dutch Sport Park is becoming famous for its evening family activi· ties, such as the annual chili cook-off. Six contestants entered their favorite brews of chili. Judges Dave Dinehart, Paul Ellis and Mark Hofaker sampled the six styles of chili, and in the end it was Lois Hinkle who won the engraved chili bowl for her second cook-off championship. There was a huge pot of chili for everyone in attendance, and the bench-racing flourished beside the community campfire while everyone enjoyed the chili. Sunday morning dawned bright and sunny. After practice, Drex Akin held a riders' meeting. Akin wanted to honor the heroes of September 11; he made up new Dutch Sport Park stickers imprinted with the slogan "Let's Roll" to honor Todd Beaver and his partners on the plane that went down in Pennsylvania. There was a minute of silence to honor the heroes. followed by the national anthem. The $Extreme Moto has been sponsored all year long by Albion Ford. Aspen Travel, Pro Action of Michigan, JSG Construction, Classic Trailers, Hi Tech Horsepower. Ameri· can Gas and Oil, Frese Discounts, The Intersection. and Scott USA. The 20-minute moto always features a bounty for the holeshot, and this day was no different. Rose used the power of his new CRF450R to power to the holes hot and pick up the Intersection/B&E Honda Holeshot money. It looked as though Nick Vaughn had it. but Rose powered into the second corner and actually gave up three positions due to an outside, on-the-gas move. However, after collecting the $100 holeshot money, Rose went to work, passing Dustin Pulley on the Dutch Sport Park Freeway and then gassing 80 JANUARV 2, 2002' cue • • it past leader Vaughn in the Sand Box. Rose was on his game, and he didn't falter for the remainder of the moto, going to the checkers to collect the win and a nice payday. Pulley carded second overall, while Swick Kawasaki/Team Green rider Vaughn placed third. In the winners' circle, Bill Vann, owner of Albion Ford. presented Rose with his winnings for the day, and with a check for second place in the $Extreme series. "Much thanks to Dutch and all the $Extreme sponsors putting this event on," Rose said. "It's been a great year, and today for the win. I just wanted to ride with a good pace and not make any mistakes. My grandpa takes me to each race event and is always there for me. Hi Tech Horse· power takes care of my motors and bikes, and Growe's Honda gives me great deals with these Hondas. I would also like to thank Fast Times and MCR for their support." Though David Gaylord didn't compete on this day due to an injury, he did collect first place for the $Extreme Series. "I would like to thank Dutch Sport Park, along with all the $Extreme spon'sors, especially Albion Ford for their support of this event: Gaylord said. "Overall, it's been a great year, but I've had some problems. Next year I'm definitely going to have to train harder to do this, with all these fast kids coming up. My great sponsors that got me here are M&M. Fox, Bridgestone, and Weisner Suspension. Much thanks!" NOV. 11·12 he Bermuda Motocross Club holds two major events per year, where the club brings over selected U.S. riders. For their annual Remembrance Day race, David Oettel was flown in from Wisconsin, and Derrick Fisher, Kyle Kelly, Christopher McCorkel and Clint Shealy traveled together from Atlanta, Georgia. Shealy was sporting a fresh cast on his wrist but still came out to support his friends. Shealy and Oettel are both regulars in Bermuda's motocross scene, and they stayed days beyond the racing to catch up with old friends. The race format was three motos per class per day, for two days. Overalls from days one and two counted toward the final overall. In five of six Pro motos, Oettel was untouchable. The only moto he didn't win was Sun- T day's final moto, in which he suffered a damaged rear sprocket and a DNF. In the opening laps. Oettel was often challenged and sometimes led by the competition, which provided the best racing of the weekend. "That guy was blazing in the rhythm section," Kelly said of his competitor. "He was absorbing every jump with his body and carrying so much more speed through there than the rest of us." Oettel was taking a break from the National Arenacross Series to come race in Bermuda as he waits for his 2002 Husqvarnas. "I am looking forward' to testing and getting ready for supercross as soon as I get my new Huskys," Oettel said. "I'm stoked to be riding for Moto Xtremes. Those guys are into helping me step up in the sport, and I want to give them some results in return." Oettel will run number 98 in the AMA Nationals and Supercross this upcoming year.
