L r The Intemational Tribunal of Appeal. composed of Mrs. Clotilde Galy (President>. and Messrs. Jacques Bourguignon and Gianfranco d·Orazi. convened at the FIM headquarters in Mies on November 26 in order to judge the appeal lodged by the Italian rider Andrea Bartolini against the decision of the Intemational Disciplinary Court (CDIl taken on October 5. according to a release issued by the FIM. Bartolini was present at the hearing. together with his lawyer Mr. Luigi Fumagaili. The TIA considered the appeal acceptable. but ill founded. and confimned in all points the sanction taken by the CDI in its decision made on October 5. The suspension of six months pronounced by the CDI haVing been interrupted from October 31 to December 2. follOWing Art. 5.7 of the Disciplinary and Arbitration Code will now end on March 15. 2002, In addition. Bartolini will have to bear the costs of the hearing. Bartolini had failed a drug test that revealed that he'd reportedly taken steroids. c C r l..J o o o o o 8 o n Kurt Caselli. the 20-year-old off-road racer from Palmdale. Califomia. has inked a new deal with KTM. joining National Enduro Champion Mike Lafferty and Shane Watts on KTM's off-road team. Caselli will focus his attention in 2002 on the World Off-Road Championship Series. the National Hare & Hound Series. the Casey Folks Best in the Desert Series and AMAlD-37 events. Husqvarna's Current World Enduro Champion Stefan Merriman has been injured in a practice crash and will be out of action for two months. according to Husqvama. Merriman was riding in a sand quarry near Pavia when he crashed and injured his right shoulder. After X-rays and further inspection the follOWing day. it was revealed the ligaments attaching the clavicle were tom. On Friday. December 7. Merriman underwent surgery to have a screw inserted into his shoulder and the ligaments reattached, He is now recovering at home and must spend two months off the bike, He will recommence training in February and should be fit to compete in the first race on his calendar. the Italian Championships in Grottaglie. Clear Channel Entertainment's motor sports division has announced that Lockhart Phillips USA has signed a deal to become the presenting sponsor of the Championship Cup Series (CCS) national motorcycle road racing series of events. The agreement makes Lockhart Phillips USA the presenting sponsors for all CCS events for 2002. 2003 and 2004, Motocross racer Mark Anderson. 42. was killed in a Grand Prix event at Speedworld in Sunrise. Arizona. on December 2. according to Barry Hale. the president of the Arizona Oldtimes MX Club. Anderson is survived by a stepdaughter. Mandy Rowe. his twin brother. Mike. and his good friend. Rob Muzzy Racing has announced that development has begun on a Kawasaki ZX-12R-based Pro Stock motorcycle. The engine will be the ZX-12 platfomn built to the current rules for both Prostar and NHRA motorcycle drag racing. This will be a long-temn project with the ultimate goal of successfully competing in the NHRA Pro Stock motorcycle professional series. according to a release issued by Muzzy Racing. In support of this effort. Rob Muzzy Racing has signed a multi-year contract with Prostar 600 Super Sport and Street Bike Shootout standout Ryan Schnitz. The current Team Muzzy Kawasaki Drag Racing Prostar Streetbike Shootout effort will continue in 2002 with a new Turbocharged Kawasaki ZX-1 2R. In related news. Muzzy has announced that Rickey Gadson will be joined by Schnitz at Team Muzzy for the 2002 Prostar Drag Racing season. Gadson will be aboard The Team's new turbocharged Kawasaki ZX-12R Streetbike Shootout entry and Schnitz will contest the new big- bore Superbike class on a naturally aspirated Muzzy ZX-12R Superbike. Max Pitts Yamaha Suzuki Honda Kawasaki Inc. of Peru. Indiana. has announced that they have signed Ohio motocrosser Jeff Gibson to a one-year contract. Gibson will ride a Yamaha YZ250F in the 125 East Coast Supercross Series. a YZ426F in the 250cc Supercross Series rounds that don't confiict. and a YZ250F in the 125cc National Motocross Series. " World Superbike legend Carl Fogarty finally got the chance to see his new machine - or at least the old GP1 version of it - put through its straight-line paces at Bruntingthorpe aerodrome in England last week. The four-stroke. three-cylinder 989cc GP1 Sauber Petronas Engineering engine still needs to be shrunk to 900cc to meet World Superbike regs. but the Monza race. on May 12. is still the goal for the team to compete in World Superbike. "This thing is like a bullet!" enthused Fogarty in a press release. "I have heard only good things about the bike and. although the engine still needs to be modified and the bike will look a lot different when it is raced. it's obvious it has real potential. I really wanted to get on and ride the bike myself. We have the top people in the industry working on the chassis and the design of the bike and. with the ongoing engine expertise of Osamu Goto and his SPE team. we are confident we will soon be running a competitive machine." According to the team's press release, the test was designed to develop the engine-management system further. as well as testing the cooling system and noise levels. Road racer Steve Rapp has signed a deal that will see him aboard Corana/EBSCO Suzukis in the 2002 600cc Supers port and Formula Xtreme classes. "It's good." Rapp said. "There's a lot of crazy stuff going on with all the Superbike cutbacks. so I'm glad I got something good. I'm excited to be riding two classes again." The former HMC Ducati rider will get his first ride on the race bikes at the Laguna Seca test in January. though he will soon be picking up his personal Suzuki GSX-R1000 on which he will take part in some local track days, Rapp says. Ben Bostrom. still recovering from the effects of an operation to repair his damaged shoulder socket. blitzed around the Kyalami circuit in his first 2002 pre-season test. The American tumed in a total of 70 laps on the opening day of the test in South Africa. With his best a highly respectable 1:42.14. a time that would be the fastest of all three days. Warm weather conditions helped the Califomian in his mission on the first day, although some of the test were disrupted by typically South African summer thunderstorms, which came after searing 95degree temperatures. "I'm really happy to get re-acquainted with my Ducati again.' said Bostrom. "but my shoulder is giving me a lot of pain. I have had to adapt my style today to get rid of some chattering and the main thing now is to test more Dunlop tires." Bostrom tumed in a total of 168 laps concentrating on tires before the test was washed out by another downpour.
