Bv BARBARA WilLIAMS PHOTOS BV LOREN WilLIAMS MORRISTOWN, TN, NOV. 30·DEC. 1 reedom MotorsportsjYamaha Corporation's Josh Summey was on a roll, winning both the 125cc A and 250cc A classes on both Friday and Saturday at rounds three and four of the Victory Sports Racing Indoor Motocross Winter Series. Aboard his Mark Smith·tuned YZs, Summey banked another $1000; he was easily the big winner of the weekend. SportscenterjWorks Connection's Jon Boy Monk of Alabama was next in line, notching three seconds and a fifth, to pocket just under $700. A good turnout at Walters State University's newly renamed Smoky Mountains Expo Arena resulted in qualifiers for many classes and sepa· rate divisions for some. Balmy weather . more like that of Florida at this time of year· made life pleasant in the pits (at least until the sun went down). Pro ActionjRentha IjOne Industries' Summey only got the holeshot in one of his four classes at Morristown· in Friday's 250cc A contest· and in both of Saturday's main events, he quickly took command with smart outside· inside moves and jump passes. How· ever, in Friday's 125cc A contest, Summey was squeezed out on the start and was stuck in third, behind Monk and Jim's Motorcycle Sales of Johnson City, Tennessee's Jon Boruff. Both Monk and Boruff had taken recuperation leaves from racing but are now fit and competitive, as was evidenced by their willingness to mix it up with Sum· mey. Also, the tight, fast Morristown track is narrow enough that an experi· enced rider can make it difficult for another to pass. By the time Summey had dealt with Boruff and Monk, there were only a few turns left, but at the checkers Summey was first. Boruff got the holeshot in Saturday's 125cc A contest, yielding to Josh McLevy, who stepped aside for Sum· mey, all in the first three turns. Sum· mey checked out, leaving all the action behind him. BDR Concepts' Danny Smith followed Summey to the front, past McLevy, Mountain Adventures Honda's Jason Fink, and Boruff. However, Smith soon wadded his Honda in the whoops, allowing Fink to take over second when McLevy slowed to avoid the wreck. Boruff had gotten hung out to dry in the first few turns and worked his way back to fourth in the early laps. Fink and McLevy argued over second for most of the 15·lap main event. Boruff F (Above) Freedom Motorsports Yamaha's Josh Summey (267) put four more wins on the record books of the Victory Sports Indoor Motocross Winter Series at rounds three and four in Morristown, Tennessee. Jon Boruff (975) pushed his Jim's Motorcycle sales-backed Hondas to the front consistently, getting a couple of holeshots and notching top-five finishes all weekend, but the class of the field was clearly Summey. (Above) Marcus John Thompson of Lenoir City, Tennessee, really knows how to fly - like a reindeer (note his antlers) - and is the only other rider to equal Summey's perfect string of wins to date in the Victory Sports Indoor MX Winter Series. Thompson leads the 125cc C and Unlimited C classes. kept watch for an opening, and on lap 10 he made an inside pass on McLevy. Before the next lap, Boruff had also passed Fink for second, where he fin· ished. McLevy demoted Fink to fourth, just ahead of Monk, climbing back from a rotten start to complete the top five. Monk claimed the 250cc A holeshot, giving up position only to Summey and maintaining second for the whole race. Smith and McLevy again gated well, but Smith crashed again. Boruff worked back from a crummy start to finish third after an interesting few laps midrace with McLevy. Fink rode a steady fifth. Summey has won every A·c1ass outing of the Indoor Series and shows early signs of a sweep. Freedom Motorsports owner Bryan Halsey was pleased at their new association. "We worked hard with Yamaha and Steve Litz of Pro Action to put this package together," remarked Halsey. "Josh had ridden Kawasakis for his whole career, so we were elated when he and his dad accepted our offer. He's a good rider and a very good rep· resentative for the sport. We hope to have a long, rewarding relationship." The only other rider in the Indoor Series to equal Summey's budding streak of wins is Marcus John Thomp· son of Lenoir City, Tennessee. Thomp· son has won all four main events in both the 125cc C and Unlimited C classes amid stiff competition, grabbing most of the holeshots and staying out of trouble at the front. In keeping with the spirit of the season, Thompson affixed felt reindeer antlers to his helmet. TBT Racing's Gary Hinkle of Eliza· bethton, Tennessee, had won the Over 25 qualifier and was out front in the Over 30 contest when his clutch plates splintered. "I heard them clicking the whole time," said Hinkle. "We replaced them, and now I just hope they hold up for tonight." Hinkle and crew did a good enough job to allow him to take the Over 30 main event, but the Over 25 contest was another story. Hinkle got the holeshot, but... "All of a sudden I just stopped," he laughed. "I looked down and some guy's front wheel had caught my foot· peg, so neither of us could move." By the time they got untangled, the whole field had blown past. Hinkle got on the gas and worked hard to make every turn count. At the end of six short laps, the Suzuki rider had clawed his way back up to second, behind Mike Nutter· Hinkle's buddy and clutch repairer. eN Smoky Mounlllins Expo Anna Morristoovn, Tennessee Resuits: November 30·December 1, 2001 (Rounds 3 and 41 Friday 50 SHAFT: 1.
