Glen Helen Raceway Park Brownfield Harvests REM Saturday MX Win By ROCKY HASH SAN BERNARDINO, CA, NOV. 11 After a week layoff while the White Brothers World Vet Championships were in town, Racing Enterprises Motorsports' weekly Saturday motocross resumed action with a large turnout of contestants and a perfect day for racing. In the always-competitive Over 40 Intennediate ranks, Mike Brownfield took a well-deserved overall class victory after posting an impressive win in the all-important second moto. In the first stanza, it was the bright orange KTM of Kirk Bassett blasting out front with the holeshot. Tim Murphy and Brownfield had their Honda CR250s running second and third, while Kawasaki KX250-mounted Steve Watson ran fourth in his first ride after a long layoff due to injury. Dave Stephens had his Shinko Tires/Wind- TWS-backed Yamaha YZ426F running fifth at the end of the. first circuit. Out front. Bassett was able to stretch out a four-second gap by the halfway point of the 15-minute contest. Murphy and Brownfield locked up in a duel for second place that sa both riders on the same second for most of the moto. By the time the white flag came out, Brownfield had managed to forge past Murphy and take control of the second-place slot. Bassett continued strong to the checkered flag and took the moto win handily. Brownfield was the runner-up, while Murphy took third. Watson was fourth, with Stephens rolling in fifth . In moto two, Brownfield led the pack out of the first comer for a nice holeshot. Murphy ran second, just ahead of Watson and Yamaha YZ250 rider Jack Phinn. Bassett came through the scoring section for the first time in fifth place. Brownfield seemed to fancy the open track in front of him, as he put a five-second gap on the field before the third lap was in the books. Murphy was riding well all alone in second place. Basset was moving forward, and by the halfway point he was up to third. Late in the contest, Murphy began to cut into Brownfield's lead, but his charge was perhaps a lap late. as he came up a few bike lengths short at the checkered flag. Bassett was a distant third, while Watson was again fourth, and Phinn rolled across the line to fill out the top five slots. On the day, Brownfield's stellar secondmoto win earned him the overaJl class honors with his 2-1 scores. Bassett was next best with his 1-3 rides for the day, while Murphy filled out the top three slots after posting a 3-2 effort. Fours were wild for Watson, as his consistent 4-4 moto finishes placed him fourth overall, and Stephens rounded out the top five for the day with his 5-6 tally. __,,,,""""""''''''-'''''''''----::::---'''''''''-"""'7-..,...,......---, a: "",-~~",,,,,,,,,,,,,,---,,,,,,,,= 0 0- S< LU > LU > '" 13 J: 0- Results 80 BEG: 1. lac: CI&it (Suz); 2. Cutler shifted it up a notch as Ellis got a little out of control, allowing Campbell by. Cutler forged another monster lead on his way to his second straight wire·towire win - and the overall BOcc Stock-class title. Ellis fought back to repass Campbell and lead him in second overall. Andrew Iovino and Durand followed in the final results. T-he combined 125cc Beginner/Novice race started out with a bang - literally, as Novice Jeff Page captured the holeshot over Jason Ellis and then washed out on the downhill tum, giving Jason and the pack nowhere to go but into a huge pileup. Novice Kris Higdon skirted the carnage and took over the lead, with fellow Novices T.L. Taylor and Travis Jackson in hot pursuit. Taylor made a pass, dragging Jackson with him, and set out for home. Taylor kept the heat on and led Jackson and Higdon through the checkers. Page outdragged Higdon for his second straight holeshot, and this time he kept it on two wheels. Taylor, in third, pounced at the first-turn downhill, shooting into second to challenge Page for the lead. Page and Taylor engaged in a wild skirmish for first, as Higdon was holding off lead Beginner Brian Fowler. Finally, midrace, Taylor stuffed Page in the uphill sweeper to take over the point. Youth will be served. however, as Page caught back up to Taylor and passed him in the rollers on the last lap. Page won the race, but his firstmoto pileup relegated him to third overall in the 125cc Novice class. Taylor's second-place finish earned him the overall 125cc Novice trophy, over Higdon. Fowler rolled snake eyes in the 125cc Beginner division to take home the china, besting Jason Bateman, Eric Campbell and Billy Guedry in the final results.
