ended with Stotz winning the final but it didn't work out that way. Stotz faced Alphonso Thompson on Alan Price's GSX-R and should have had him covered. Stotz stood the bike up down track and slowed to an 8.22 as Thompson took his first Prostar win with a 7.97 at 176 mph. Team Green rider Ryan Schnitz held court on his ZX-6R in the Zero Gravity 600 SuperSport class, holding a quantum performance edge on the rest of the field and gamering his first championship. Schnitz was simply spectacular in every respect. His barrier-busting, number-one qualifying effort of 9.792 seconds at 140.40 mph established new performance standards and a new elapsed-time record. In eliminations, Schnitz was a back-breaker. He ran eerily consistent, with elapsed times that varied by only three hundredths while holding at least a 10th on the rest of the field. Final-round opponent and Team Green teammate Keith Thompson gave it a game try with a strong .414 reaction time, but Schnitz was just too quick, taking his third win of the season, 9.84 to 10.02. Jon Cornell has been the class of the field in Yamaha Hot Rod Cruiser action this season. Since debuting Bob Minarik's Harley Davidson at Atlanta, Cornell has won every event, save for a final-round loss to Rick McWaters at Atco. Cornell looked to keep the streak going, taking the pole at 10.82/119 but Leonard Mellgren has been making strides on his Yamaha Road Star and was right on Cornell's heels with a 10.89/120. The two met in the final, where Cornell got the holeshot but broke a gear down track. Mellgren, who earlier recorded top speed at 121 mph, might have been too much to handle anyway as he recorded the low e.t. with a booming final-round timeslip of 10.79 seconds.
