bike and was more determined than ever to pass his fellow riders. Gosselaar, who was last, had more of an incentive to pass riders, and he took and held the lead. The second posi. tion was contested by Faulkner and Johnson, with Johnson taking second in the moto. In the second moto. Johnson. who was running last, took the lead position when Gosselaar spun out of control and gave the lead away. GosseJaar and Johnson made a show of fighting for the lead. In the end, Johnson took first place. The battle for third went back and forth between Chris Tocco and Faulkner, with Chris putting quite a distance between himself and Johner. other first-timer racing was Scott Underdahl, who was also racing Competition Park for the first time. Taking off in the first gate were Robert Jirm and A.J. Sjostrom, competing in the adjoined 80cc Intermediate class. and Kyle Summit, competing in the adjoined 80cc Novice class. Jirm went 1-1. Sjostrom was riding with a broken right ankle; it was amazing to see this kid riding his bike and doing the double jumps with a cast on. If Sjostrom was not injured. he and Jirm may have had a great battle. Results 65 FIT: I. Blake CRlwfO«! (KlIW). 65 BEG: t. JOfden Bums (Kew): 2. Denid Kline (Kew): 3. KOI')' Summit (Kaw). 60 F(f: 1. Starwest Motocross Park Johnson Just Cruisin' By JYlJKE AND BARBARA PALUZZI MORENO VALLEY, CA, NOV. 10 Casey Johnson showed up Saturday night at Starwest hoping six other pros would be there so they could all compete for the $1000 Pro payout. Unfortunately, Johnson and Joel Nelson were the only Pros in attendance. Making the best of the situation, Johnson and Nelson rode in a combined gate with the 250cc Intermediates and Novices. Johnson had no problems taking the early lead and showing everyone what they could expect from him in the 2002 season. Johnson was in complete control and looked stylish as he put on a good show for the crowd. Doug Bell was in control of the 250cc Novice class, as he held off Rodolfo Rohr and Jay Cortner in each moto for the overall win. Some of the most exciting racing of the night was in the 125cc Novice class. In the first mota, Suzuki-mounted Kevin Holmes nailed the holeshot, followed by Erik Fauscette. Holmes continued with the lead, with Fauscette close behind. By the fourth lap, Holmes and Fauscette were side by side down the back straightaway, but Holmes would not budge and Fauscette could not find his way around. Meanwhile, the battle for the thirdplace position was heating up; Arizona's Matt Petrucci was feeling the heat as Jimmy Gonzales was applying the pressure to take the last podium position. The checkered flag came out and it was Holmes. Fauscette, Petrucci and Gonzales. Gonzales absconded with the second-mota holeshot, and he was on fire. Gonzales took the advantage of the holeshot and ran away with it. Holmes stayed close behind but could not stop the adrenaline that was pumping through Gonzales, who took the second-mota win, followed by Holmes and Josh Camden. Holmes took the overall win with a 1-2 finish, followed by Gonzales (4-1) and Fauscette (2-5). The 85cc Beginner (12- 16) class was an open-and-shut case. Federico KindweiJer was on the gas aboard his Renthal-backed Honda. Kindweiler took both mota wins, with Nick Brown close behind hjm in each moto, scoring second overall with a 2-2 tally. Casey Meron rounded out the top three with a 3-3 score. Jarred Browne was once again showing his stuff as he took a six-moto sweep to be crowned a triple-class winner by taking the overall victories in the 85cc (12-13) division, the Supermini class and the 85cc Open class. Shawn Gritten had the 65cc (6-8) class under control with a 1- I sweep, followed by Ryan Galvez and Daniel Paluzzi. Carlos Don was the 50cc (7-8) class winner despite some tough competition from Paluzzi. Although Paluzzi took the first-moto win, Don returned in the second mota and was able to pass Paluzzi to take the win and the overall. Results Pee Wee. Track 50 SHAFT (4.6): l. Me'" _ Competition Park Montoya Takes the Cake (and the Win) By SHARON ROBERTS SAN JACINTO, CA, NOV. 10 On his 12th birthday, Casey Montoya went 3-1 for the first place overaU in the 80cc Beginner class at Competition Park. In the first moto, Dalton Baillie got the holeshot, followed by Bryan Roberts and Daniel Arredondo. Before the first lap was complete, Baillie and Roberts had changed positions several times, but by the end of lap one Roberts had the lead. Arredondo also got by Baillie to take over second place. As' Roberts started pulling away, there was a great battle going on for fourth place between Danny McDonough (an 80cc first-timer), Lee Tucker and Montoya. Finally, after three laps of battling, Montoya got by Tucker, and within the next lap he got by McDonough to take over fourth place. Roberts had a good lead, and it was looking like he would take first when, on lap six, he experienced electrical problems that took him out of the race and he was done for the day. That gave the lead to Antelope Valley Fairgrounds: Tim Weigand won the 250cc Pro class and finished third In the 125cc Pro class at the Antelope Valley Stadium Cross in Lancaster, California. eye •• n ..
