Wabash Cannonball Motocross: Dustin Pulley took the overall wins in the 250cc A and
16-24 classes in Wabash, Indiana.
two feet past the gate and pitched the chain
off the sprockets.
Up front, Stanton was enjoying a nice
advantage. Witmer was in trouble, with a broken carb bracket - and then his fast mount
started cutting out on the top end. Dick
Burleson and David Gaylord were nipping at
Witmer's heels for the first few laps. Burleson
made a clean pass, taking Gaylord along with
him past Witmer. Gaylord continued to hound
Burleson, waiting for a mistake. Burleson was
making the most of the track, going wide to
keep up his speed, but a tire grabbed the front
end of his mount and threw him off in front of
Gaylord. The multi-time enduro champ was
flat run over by Gaylord (though Gaylord
maintained he tried to miss the fallen rider as
best he could).
Stanton cruised home with a easy win. He
rode his butt off and came prepared to retain
his title. Jay Wagner came through the fieid
and, using lappers to his advantage, passed
Gaylord in the closing stages for the runner-up
position. Witmer carded fourth. with Todd
FI ickenger nipping hard at his rear wheel at
the checkers. Burleson ended up seventh. Usa
Akin-Wagner crashed hard on the last lap and
broke her collarbone, and was overheard saying, "That's it for my racing career - I'm leaving it up to my boys from here on out."

Jeff Stanton loves racing. And Stanton loves
Red Bud's final event of the year.
The XR track championship attracts riders
from all around the Midwest. Stanton had a
couple of 2002 Honda CR250s to play on. He
had heavy competition from his buddy Mike
laRocco in three divisions. It was just for fun.
but they sure went fast anyway!
The XR track championship had two qualifiers on Sunday morning and a consolation
event prior to the big half-time show. The
fences were packed three-deep in some spots
around the auto track.
Qualifier number one went to North End
Cycle/Maxima/Powerbar/FMF/ Answer's Larry
Witmer, who took the holeshot and, despite
some pressure from Bobby Wagner (until his
chain spit off), Witmer went wire to wire for
the win.
Qualifier number two was a showdown
between Stanton and young lion Derek Rose.
Stanton pulled the holeshot. Rose kept the
pressure on the multi-time champ. At halfway,
Stanton was riding hard, grabbing too much
front brake in one of the switchback turns.
This sent the front end of the trick XR down
onto the ground. Rose had to make a change
of lines in order to not run over the downed
Stanton, and then he powered to the checkers,
with Stanton close behind.
The final had 25 of the fastest XR riders
ready to battle. It was a sight to see - and
hear!
Witmer pulled the holeshot, only to see
Stanton sweep the outside of the first comer
with a wide line to steal the lead. That would
be all anyone wou.ld see of Stanton - except
for the lappersl Early favorite Rose only went
