~TOYOTA Official Truck of Glen Helen VIE&D presents the across the border into Sandy, Nevada, where lunch and gas were both free. More experienced riders had a choice of two routes, both of which included the picturesque Kingston Wash area - a more-dirt route that covered 72 miles or an easier route that included a little pavement and covered a total of 68 miles. "Sand and silt - that was day two. Before lunch was sand, after lunch was silt. That covers it," said Larry Woodruff, but he did admit to having a wonderful time in the hard-way option. "That part was great, except for a magnetized rock the size of a car. I'm riding down a sand wash and all of a sudden I'm drawn to this rock. My bike ran right into it. I can't explain it. The bike just ran right up to it and lay down against the side of the rock." Jim Pilon, whose name is almost synonymous with organized dualsport rides, was also having the time of his life. After 17 years of helping to organize LA-B-to-V, Pilon was actually riding the event for the first time. "Whenever I have a chance to get out and ride I have fun, even if I crash, which I did this weekend in Kingston Wash," said Pilon, who reported that his injuries amounted to little more than a sore neck and a bruised ego. "I have to give the crew that organized it high marks. The scenic areas they had were great, and so was the fact that they changed the course drastically over the last few years and put us through areas that were controversial to the BLM as our way of saying we are here and we are going to do this. It's an open riding area." After lunch, all that was left was a 98-mile romp to the finish at Las Vegas' San Remo Hotel Casino, but Mother Nature had been smiling on the dual sporters for long enough. "At lunch there were just a couple of clouds showing, but soon after that it started to rain. And we're talking real rain. Wet-to-the-skin rain," said Woodruff. "Unless you left the start really, really early, everybody got soaked. I ended up taking the last bailout just to get out of it." Riders who soldiered on were buffeted by strong winds and saw snow flurries as they headed through the final section at Red Rock, but they were none the worse for wear at the Saturday-night banquet and prize giving. "Injuries were really low. We don't know of anyone who went to the hospital, and we're very happy about that," said Jim Woods. "We are also happy that everybody made it in. Most of the riders took the bailout into Jean [Nevada] because it was raining so hard. They used their heads and did what they had to do to finish safely. We think that's great."
