Ta.e~ PHOTOS BY KINNEY JONES PALMDALE, CA, NOV. 23-25 I - or the fourth year in a row, HollyLI - wood celebrated its long-standing love affair with motorcycles by hosting the annual "A Day in the Dirt" at L.A. County Raceway in Palmdale, California. Hollywood stuntmen Kenny Alexander and Jimmy Roberts, once again, invited people from the movie industry and the motorsports world, including extreme-sport athletes, auto racers and Supercrossjmotocross stars of today and yesteryear, to compete in a variety of forms of motorcycle racing - all for fun. Some of the many stars that came out to play included seventime Supercross Champion Jeremy McGrath, who competed in his very first Vet race, motocrossers Jeff Emig, Jeff Ward, Rick Johnson, Erik Kehoe, Ron Lechien, Mike Kiedrowski, Micky Dymond, Jim Holley and Mouse McCoy, auto racer Paul Tracy, Jet Ski racers Victor Sheldon, Clay Cullen and Larry Rippenkroeger, off-road racers J.N. Roberts and Oakley Lehman, helmet painter Troy Lee, and dirt tracker David Aldana. Bad weather, however, nearly got the best of this year's event. Over 60- 20 DECEMBER 12, 2001 • cue I mph winds forced the premature finish of the Vet race on Saturday, which was won by McGrath, who later said that he likes to ride in the wind. The winds eventually gave way to heavy rains, forcing the remaining races to be postponed until Sunday. The pit area was pretty much destroyed because of Saturday's "hurricane," but the "A Day in the Dirt" crew worked through the night to get things ready for Sunday's event. The weather cooperated on Sunday, but the races had to be trimmed to accommodate Sunday's now even fuller schedule. The event was capped off with the premier event, the Coup de Grace, which was won by Mike Kiedrowski, followed by 125cc National MX Champion Mike Brown, and Erik Kehoe. Overall, nearly 800 riders came out to participate, while approximately 3500 spectators came out to watch. Alexander and Roberts wanted to thank the event sponsors, Weider publications, BC Ethic, N-Style, Universal Studios, Setwear, Red Bull, EI Monte RV and all of the stunt organization, for helping make this year's event happen. CN n e _ s e Cycle World magazine's Jimmy Lewis hung on to finish third in the Evolution Expert/Pro class.
