Oregon State Motocross Championship Series Final Round: Exposition Arena STORV AND PHOTOS BV CLAV LIGttT SAlEM, OR, OCT. 28 ashington Professional riders J.R. Vielle and Tracy Johnson ruled the roost at the final round of the Oregon State Motocross Championship Series, held inside Exposition Arena at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem. Vielle, a secondyear Pro, topped the competitive 250cc Pro class with consistent 2-2 placings, while Johnson jolted the competition in the 125cc Pro class via 3-1 performances. Also standing tall at the series' finale were KTM riders Pete Sannan and another of the multitude of riders to make the trek from the Evergreen State, Landon Currier. Oregon's Sannan scored what would be his fourth double-class decimation of the six rounds by winning the 125cc and Before The Hill Junior classes. Currier did damage in the 60cc ranks, posting 60cc Senior and 60cc Open-class wins. The largest number of riders in the Professional classes were on hand, providing the best race action in the series. Local Honda rider Keith Kadell managed to slingshot to the head of the field at the unleashing of the first 125cc Pro moto, escaping a multiplerider pileup behind him. Unfortunately for Kadell, the race was redflagged, although the rider from Carlton, Oregon, was back out front on the restart. KTM-mounted Washingtonian Garhett Carter, winner of the previous round, put pressure on Kadell early on in the 12-lap moto and was right there to snatch the lead when the 17year-old Arenacross phenom fell. Carter then held a large advantage until Yamaha rider Paul Conner forged forward to join Carter in a close confrontation. Carter, though, picked up the win ahead of Conner, Johnson, Kadell and another Washington rider, Doni Wanat. Moto two was all Johnson's. Putting his Yamaha at the head of the field, Johnson would not be overtaken, despite challenges from Kadell and Conner. Kadell ran a solid second for much of the moto before being passed by Conner. However, Conner couldn't find a way around Johnson, who won overall. Conner (2-2), Kadell (4-3), Wanat (5-4) and Carter (1-8) filled out the top five. Johnson won overall. The fast-starting Kadell ran out front in the first 250cc Pro moto, followed by Conner, Jon Kauffman, Johnson, Vielle and perhaps the winningest rider at the facility, Oregon's Ryan Leach. Kadell felt the heat from a trio of Washington riders - Conner, Johnson and Vie lie, all of whom clung to his rear wheel for many laps. Kadell, though, slid out in the loamy turf, and from that point on it was Conner's race. Conner collected the win, ahead of Vielle, the second-place finisher, and Leach, who had won the night prior. Vielle led much of moto two before giving way to Kadell late in the moto. The two went head to head, but Kadell posted his best performance of the evening. However, it was the 21-year-old Suzuki rider from Kalama, Washington - Vielle- who posted the overall win with a 2-2 tally. Conner (1-3), Kadell (4-1), Wanat (5-4) and Leach, who suffered from poor starts all evening, rounded out the top five. Johnson, who placed third in moto one and was running up front in moto two, was later disqualified for running a 125cc machine. In the adjoined 250cc Intermediate class, Kauffman and Yamaha-mounted Raym Conkey split moto wins while running in the thick of the Pros, with the YZ250F-mounted Conkey nabbing the overall win aboard the Power Yamaha-supported machine. Kauffman finished second overall, followed by Yamaha rider Jack Meadows (3-6). Currier, who recently made the switch from Kawasaki to KTM machinery, was the cream of the crop in the 60cc ranks. Currier's best performances came in the 60cc Open class, in which the DeMarini/Pro CaJiberrrroy Lee-backed rider from Brush Prairie, Washington, led both motos from start (Left) Rochelle Neimann clinched the title in the Women's class at the final round of the six-race series. 18 DECEMBER 5,2001 • eye •• n e _ s (Left) Washington's Landon Currier scored a double-class decimation at the Exposition Arena at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem, winning the 60cc Open and 60Cc Senior classes. to finish. Kawasaki rider Danny Gubser trailed Currier in both motos to net second overall, although he had tough challenges from KTM riders Gared Steinke and twin brothers Travis and Tyler McClinton. Currier also clobbered the 60cc ranks, posting a win in the 60cc (9-11) class ahead of Gubser and Tyler McClinton. Steele Angel-Davidson beat Bebo Clark and Dylan Stone for a win in the 60cc (6-8) division, while Charles Fettinger landed a win in the adjoined 60cc Beginner class, ahead of fellow KX rider Justin Conn and KTM-mounted Chris Egan. Kawasaki-mounted Curtis Sweezey has been impressive throughout the series, and on this day he was among the select few double-class winners, posting the Supermini and 80cc (12-13) class wins. Sweezey beat Jordan Mockridge and Ross Johnson to card a win in the ultracompetitive Supermini class. Yamaha YZ426F-mounted David Sibley posted overall wins in the Over 30 Pro and Four-Stroke classes, topping KTM rider Gary Beyer and Honda pilot Chris Clark to score his first of two wins in the Over 30 Pro event. eN Exposition Arena Salem, Oregon Results: October 28, 2001 [Final round) WMN: 1.
