California Racing Club Sponsorsf.7ip Series Round 5: Wild Turkey Grand Prix STORV AND PHOTOS BV GREG ROBERTSON SAN BERNARDINO, CA, NOV. 11 he Yamaha-mounted duo of Scott Roegner and Matt Jones came on strong in less-than-ideal conditions to win the Four-Stroke and 125cc Beginner classes, respectively, at Glen Helen Raceway Park during the Wild Turkey Grand Prix, which was the fifth and final round of the 13th annual California Racing Club/Galpin Ford/JMG Motorsports/VP Racing Fuels-packed Sponsorship Series. The Four-Stroke class was the first race of the day, and the riders were greeted with a saturated track from overnight rains that left most of the comers with axle-deep ruts for them to negotiate. As luck would have it, when the green flag dropped to start the race, a light rain started to fall. YZ250F rider Don Bizzy slithered his way into the lead as the 45-minute race got under way. John Ferro was running a close second, ahead of Roegner, Marc Prince and Jeremy Ferro. By lap two, on the slippery course that would take nearly seven minutes to complete, Roegner was out front, while John Ferro had gotten around Bizzy for second place. Once in the lead, Roegner was putting a few seconds per lap on John Ferro as he continued uncontested for the win. Jeremy slowly reeled in John and overtook his fellow CRF450R pilot for second place with time running out. Bizzy held on to fmish fourth, ahead of Prince and Kevin Petersen. Jones got things started in his favor by sliding his way into a comfortable lead on the opening lap of the 125cc Beginner race. Aaron Graham controlled the runner-up position, with Jared Whitlaw, Anthony Sena and Jeremy Cote in pursuit. Sena passed Whitlaw and Graham to move up into second place and was then handed the lead when Jones went down near the 25-minute mark of the 45-minute race. Sena's lead lasted about a lap before Jones made his move into the top spot, this time for good. Cote methodically worked his way toward the front of the field, passing both Graham and Whitlaw to earn the second-place trophy. Whitlaw ended up finishing fifth, behind Colby Dawson, with Evan Wilhelm coming from way back off the start to finish in sixth at the checkers, ahead of Sena and Mike Garcia. Steven Perry was impressive in the 250cc Beginner class, as he emerged with the early lead aboard his Jones Racing/Sinisalo/FMF-backed YZ250 and continued on unchallenged for the victory. Eugene Hernandez was all alone at the checkers for second place, with Jeremy Heiner, Kenny Kopecky and Dustin Pemberton rounding out the top five finishers. The Women's' class win went to YZ125-mounted Jaime Burgess, who led every lap in the sloppy conditions 22 DECEMBER 5, 2001 • (Left) Scott Roegner ran off with the Four-Stroke-class win and finished third In the 250cc Intemoediate class at the Wild Turkey Grand Prix. (Far left) Randy Wilkins came out on top of a race-long duel with Steve Fry for the Vet Intennediate-elass victory at Glen Helen Raceway Park. for the well-deserved victory, with Tamara Neitzel a close second. Courtney Burgess went the entire distance in third place, where she finished, in front of Kathy Knight and Amy Hasten. It wasn't much of a contest in the 85cc (7-11) class, as Axo/Smith/ Silkolene-sponsored Nick Sanchez was untouchable right from the drop of the gate. Taylor Kellstrom was runner-up, ahead of Shawn Butler. Jason Parsons put his CR80 into the point position on the opening lap of the 85cc Beginner class and stayed there for the duration to claim the win. The series points leader in the 85cc Beginner class, Cory Tocco, would have to be content with a second-place finish over A.J. Wilson, Steve Hinton and Keith Robinson. By the time the Vets hit the track a little after noon, the ran had stopped, and brief periods of sunshine had dried the track somewhat. Chris Ridgeway found the slightly improved conditions much to his liking, as he absolutely dominated the Vet Pro class. CRF450R pilot Frank Costanzo collected second-place payback over Jimmy Chamberlin and Robbie Dunham. Steve Fry held off the advances of Randy Wilkins for the first 30 minutes cue •• n __ s of the Vet Intermediate class before Fry bobbled a rutted tum and Wilkins went by for good to take the win. Joe Villegas overcame a last-place start to finish in second place, ahead of William Welchhance and Fry. CN &len HellllI IIal:eway Putl s.n .........
