Halloween Classic Broome-Tioga Sports Center STORV AND PHOTOS BV JIM P. SANDERSON BINGHAMTON, NY, OCT. 28 rant Gasstrom and Phil Nicoletti spooked their competitors into submission at the third annual Halloween Classic at the Broome-Tioga Sports Center. Gasstrom topped the Over 25 Expert podium, while Nicoletti topped the Mini Combined and Junior Mini 80cc podiums. Both riders rode to perfect 1-1 scores for the overall wins in their respective classes. This was the final race of the season for Broome-Tioga. This annual event, hosted by Hurd MotorSports, features a Halloween party on Saturday night, complete with a best-costume contest for the kids. More than 350 riders came out for the season finale. Gasstrom piloted his Yamaha to the front of the pack in the first Over 25 Expert moto, with John Young, Tim Henry and John Nelson in tow. Young emerged from the front supercross section with the lead. Gasstrom dropped to second. Henry and Nelson held third and fourth, and Clayton Blowers moved up to fifth. On lap two, Gasstrom came off the front in the point position. Henry moved up to second and Young dropped to third. Gasstrom had an eight-second advantage by the start of lap three. Henry was feeling pressure from Young, who closed the gap to a couple of bike lengths. Young made the pass on the step-down jump to retake second. Henry dropped to third. Young began a charge to catch Gasstrom and closed the gap to three seconds by the last lap. Young made his first pass attempt on the inside in the first tree turn but couldn't get it done. Young made one last pass attempt in the final corner. Young went wide coming off the berm, hit Gasstrom and went down. Young remounted in second. Gasstrom got the first-moto win, followed by Young, Henry, Blowers and Nelson. Blowers rounded the first turn with the lead in the second Over 25 Expert moto. Trailing were Gasstrom and Young. After half a lap, the top five were Gasstrom, Young, Blowers, Nelson and Brett Sherman. Young's KX outpowered Gasstrom's YZ in a drag race up the hill, with Young making the pass for the lead. Three turns later, Gasstrom passed Young back for the lead. When the leaders came off the front section on lap two, the top-five running order was Gasstrom, Young, Blowers, Nelson and Henry. Halfway through lap three, Nelson overshot a turn and went off the track, which allowed Henry to move up to fourth. Gasstrom got the second-moto win. Trailing were Young, Blowers, Sherman and Henry. Young's consistent 2-2 tally got him the runner-up spot, and Blowers rounded out the podium, carding a 4-3 on the day. Sean Wallace rounded the switchback first turn with the early lead in the first Mini Combined moto. In tow were Frank Burns, Nicoletti, Kurt Humphreys and Mike Case. Near the end of the first lap, Wallace was still out front. Nicoletti was charging and had made his way around Burns to take second. Humphreys and Case were still fourth and fifth. When the leaders came off the front supercross section on lap two, Nicoletti was in the lead and Burns was up to second. Wallace fell back to third, Case was fourth and Humphreys dropped to fifth. Nicoletti had a six-second lead by lap three. The top five were quite spread out by now. Nicoletti got the first-moto win with an eight-second lead. Trailing were Burns, Wallace, Case and Humphreys. Case nailed the second Mini Combined moto holeshot. When the lead riders emerged from the front section, the top five were Case, Chris Strong, Humphreys, Burns and Nicoletti. Just before the start of lap two, Nicoletti was charging and was already up to third, relegating Humphreys and Burns to fourth and fifth. Off the front section on lap two, Case was still leading - though not for much longer, as Nicoletti was up to second and pressuring Case for the lead. Strong dropped to third, Burns was up to fourth and Wallace was fifth. Near the end of lap two, Nicoletti passed Case to take the lead. Case dropped to second. On lap three, Nicoletti and Case were still out front. Burns moved up to third, Strong dropped to fourth and Wallace was still fifth. Two turns later, Wallace made the pass on Strong to take fourth. Strong was relegated to fifth. Nicoletti pulled away once again and finished the moto with a 12-second lead. Trailing were Case, Burns, Wallace and Strong. Nicoletti topped the Mini Combined podium via his perfect 1-1 rides, while Bums earned the runner-up spot with his 2-3 rides and Case rounded out the podium with a 4-2 score. eN lInIo...-TItIp $pelts Center Blnau-n.
