Willow Springs International Raceway Graves Writes Their Obits Bv ERIC VINCENT ROSAMOND, CA, OCT. 20-21 It was once again the Chuck Graves Show during the 10th round of Willow Springs Motorcycle Club action, as he won multiple races, including both the Formula One and Formula Two events. Graves was fastest off the line in the Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula One Grand Prix on his Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-Rl. Jeremy Toye and Ken Chase emerged in second and third on the first of 12 laps. Chase came under pressure on lap two when Tony Meiring and Jason Curtis drafted one another down the front straight. Meiring emerged in third rounding tum two, but Curtis managed to take over third as the riders came out of turn nine to start lap three. Exiting tum one, Curtis powered around Meiring, but he and Meiring remained locked in a tight battle. Midway through lap four, Curtis and Meiring encountered a lapped racer and Curtis gained a few seconds making the pass. How· ever, that advantage quickly evaporated, as Meiring was in Curtis' draft on the front straight to start lap six. Meiring's efforts paid off as he powered past Curtis between turns two and three. Over the next few laps, Meiring and Curtis exchanged places several more times. Early on lap 11, Meiring began to lose ground to Curtis and then, down the back straight, Meiring slowed dramatically with mechanical problems. Meiring was forced to pull out of the race, leaving Curtis with a solid hold on third. At the line, Graves took the win, followed by Toye and Curtis. Graves was first off the line in the Hyperc1ub/WSMC Formula Two Grand Prix, followed by Kenny Kopecky and Bryan Kovarick. Several turns into the IO-lap event, Kovarick passed Kopecky for second. Near the end of lap two, Jacob West challenged Kopecky for third. He first attempted to draft and pass down the front straight, but Kopecky held him off. Then, rounding tum two, West found his opening and powered past Kopecky. Not satisfied with third, West began to close the gap on Kovarick over the next four laps, and by lap six West was sitting in Kovarick's draft:. On the next lap, West dropped to the inside of Kovarick in the long turn-eight sweeper and moved into second. Midway through the next lap, a crashed racer brought out the red nags and an early end to the race, leaving Graves with the win, followed by West second and Kovarick. In the Graves Motorsports 650cc Super. bike race, Kopecky grabbed the holeshot but was quickly passed by Graves, Vincent Haskovec and Kovarick. However, Haskovec had jumped the start and was subsequently disqualified. Midway ttlrough the six·lap sprint race, Haskovec was sitting in Graves' draft for the lead. On the final lap, Haskovec passed Graves on the inside of tum eight to take over the lead. However, Graves used the draft and a horsepower advantage to get past Haskovec on the front straight to take the win. While Haskovec crossed the line second, his disqualification gave second to Kovarick and third to Robbie Dowie. Results F-l: I. Chuck Qrayes (Yom): 2. Jeremy Toye (Yom): 3. Joson CU'tIs (Suz): 4.
