Northwest Vintage Motocross Championship Series Round 2: Woodland Motocross Park STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT WOODLAND, WA, OCT. 20 Z-mounted Chris Clark and Honda pilot Joe Casey crushed the competition at round two of the Vintage Dirt Racing-sanctioned Northwest Vintage and Evolution Motocross Championship Series at Woodland Motocross Park. Casey clobbered the competition in the Over 30 and Open Expert classes, while Casey was in command of the 125cc and 250cc Expert classes during the Vintage portion of the program. Double winners in the Evolution (1975-83) program included Maicomounted J.R. Cunningham, who topped the Under 40 and Unlimited Intermediate classes, and Honda rider Paul Thompson. Riding a 1980 Honda CR250, Thompson made his track debut payoff by winning the Over 40 and 250cc Evolution Expert classes, both with 1-1 sweeps. Just shy of 300 riders were on hand for the race, which also doubled as the Woodland Motocross Park's season opener. The weather - normally cold and rainy in the Northwest this time of the year - was summerlike. One of the first classes to tackle the superb conditions was the Over 40 Evolution class. Honda rider Bill Grubin dominated both motos, finishing ahead of Maico rider George Bellanger in moto one; Bellanger clung to Grubin's rear wheel for much of the moto and finished second, barely nipping Bultaco-mounted Steve Pulsiulli at the finish. Moto two was again all Grubin's; he held a large advantage at the finish, ahead of Bellanger, who trailed Grubin in both motos. Glen Rose, aboard the smallest machine in the field, garnered third in moto two to net third overall with a 4-3 score, followed by Mako rider Jim Munger (5-4), Louie Steinhauer (6-5) and Mark Baer (8-6). Thompson and Kawasaki-mounted Jim Sawtell had one of the day's best battles, in the combined Under 40/0ver 40 Evolution Expert class, but in the end it was Thompson who prevailed. Sawtell was in the hunt for much of the first moto until his 1979 KX250 developed problems and he dropped off the pace. Thompson did similar damage in moto two to lead Cunningham (the top performer in the Under 40 Intermediate class), Expert Kary Krahel, Scott McAllister and Husky pilot Matt Waldron (who finished second to Thompson in the Over 40 portion). Yamaha-mounted Washingtonian Kurt Stevens put his 1981 YZ465 into the winner's circle after dominating both Open Evolution Expert/Intermediate motos, beating C&J Yamaha riders Monty Price and Dennis Sweeten in moto one and then coming back to do likewise in moto two. Grubln _n both motos for the overall victory, (3-2) finished second overall, followed by Krahel (4-3). Scott Howland topped the Intermediate portion, ahead of McAllister and Lyle Beach. Clark's first win on the day came in the combined Over 30/0ver 40 Expert contest. Clark got the holeshot in moto one to lead Kawasaki-mounted Blake Landon, Kenny Brynn, Keith Webster and Charlie Brown. It was all Clark, though, as the rider from Gladstone, Oregon, was too much for the competition in his runaway Over 30class win. Landon finished second, ahead of Over 40 riders Webster and Brown and the top-placing Intermediate, Over 40 rider Brynn. Moto two was a near-repeat, as Clark put his ultratrick 400cc CZ out in front of the pack and remained there for a 1-1 sweep ahead of Landon, who finished second overall to Clark in the Over 30 class. Webster, aboard a 1974 Husky CR400, topped the Over 40 Expert class, followed by Montesa-mounted Brown. Brynn, who went 1-2 in the Over 40 Intermediate class, scored an overall win ahead of Bill Brown and Dino Medina. The largest class of the day was the 250cc Vintage Amateur class. CZ jockey Alex Saario netted the overall win in the 17-rider field, although the Washingtonian had to come from behind in both motos. Anderberg put his Bultaco out in front in moto two for keeps, but a first-moto fourth-place finish kept him out of contention for the overall, as Saario's 1-2 placings earned the win. Casey, who competed aboard a pair of 1974 Honda CR Elsinores, posted a four-for-four moto-win tally on the day, his first coming in the combined Four-Stroke Evolution/125cc/Open Vintage Expert classes. Sweeten and Price spent much of the moto in close quarters before Sweeten won uncontested after Price developed a flat tire. Clark, who started in the second wave, trailed Sweeten in moto one, followed by Casey and Bultaco rider Rick Ball. Sweeten won moto two for the Evolution-class win, followed by Clark, who was the top Open Vintage Expert rider, and Casey, the top 125cc Vintage Expert rider. Casey came back later to top the 250cc Vintage Expert/Intermediate class, ahead of Landon, Kyle Webster and Randy Brown. John Howerton topped Jon Wall to win the adjoined Intermediate class.
