hours, 51 minutes and 40 seconds,
averaging 48.84 mph. They were also
the first vehicle overall to cross the
finish line.
Even though the consecutive win
record was on the line in this year's
race, a modest Campbell said, "I
didn't come to this race to break
records." For Campbell, this was his
unprecedented fifth Baja win in a row,
a record for the race's 34-year history. Larry Roeseler, who won the Baja
1000 four times in a row from 1990
to 1994, previously held the record.
It was also the third straight Baja
1000 win for Campbell's co-rider Tim
Staab.
The factory Honda "5X" riders Steve Hengeveld and Jonah Street finished almost an hour later in a time
of 14 hours, 46 minutes and 40 seconds. Their trouble-filled ride held
their speed average down to "just"
45.88 mph.
Their second-place finish, however, was more than enough for
Hengeveld to clinch the SCORE Baja
Championship.
Chris Haines signed on Baja veterans Jack Johnson, Bob Johnson and
Craig Adams to his Class 40 team
and the group used their excellent
riding skills and Baja experience to
take third overall and first place in
Class 40. They completed the run in
16 hours, 9 minutes, and 52 seconds,
averaging 41.88 mph.
The third, fourth and fifth overall
bikes all finished within three-and-ahalf minutes of each other, the Haines
team finishing ahead of the first Class
30 team by three minutes and 18
seconds.
With Haines waiting to take the
bike to the finish, Jack Johnson
