BRIEFLY••• Former premier off·road racer Mike Baker doesn't race much anymore, but one couldn't tell by his stellar performances throughout the weekend. Baker piloted his Pro·Tec-built Yamaha four· strokes to third in the 250cc race, fourth in the 125cc race and first in the plus 40 and FourStroke races. Former Hamel , 00 winner Mike Healey reigned supreme in the Adult Mini race, which was ran with the Open ciass on Saturday afternoon. For his efforts, Heaiey pocketed the $500 Adult Mini Purse. In addition to winning the Legends race for the umpteenth time, KTM's Scot Harden entered the Harvey Mushman 100 aboard an Adventure· KTM's retail rally bike. Equipped with turn signals, mirrors, a hom and the potential to ride the entire Mushman 100 without stopping for gas, Harden finished a respectable 45th. completing 1g laps. It's been a long year, and the injured reserve list of top off-road racers definitely reflects it. National Hare and Hound champ Destry Abbott was in town with his wife and kids, but was not competing, still nursing a tender shoulder injury he suffered while practicing last month. Multitime Hamel 100 top·'O finisher Joey Lanza was also present. helping out with race organization, but could not compete due a recent separated shoulder. And according to Terry Davis, his son Ty is still recovering from foot surgery. Terry made the family proud, however, finishing sec· ond in the Over 50 Expert class. The extended season for Team Suzuki Off-Road may have played a role in Rodney Smith con· tracting the flu, in which he has been unable to shake for a long time. "I've been sick since the last GNCC," said Smith. "That's why [Mikel Kiedrowski isn't here today. He might have got· ten the flu from me. It's been gnarly. I've been sick before and it slows you down a little bit, but this knocked me out. I raced the WORCS race last week in Oregon and I feit good there. I was surprised I held up, but since then I've felt worse. I rode one day this week and I haven't really been able to train in over a month. It's been a long season. I've got one more race left." The Yoshimura/Suzuki and Kawasaki Team Green semis were the most impressive rigs sit· ting on the Main Street pits in Lake Elsinore, though KTM's lack of a factory semi does not make their effort any less impressive. KTM·backed riders such as Watts, Myers, Brian and Pat Garra· han, Paul Krause, Revelle Harrison and the Harden family had a strong presence in race results, and entered the most events as a team. Riders come from allover to race the Elsinore Grand Prix, but none came further than Matthew Pursley. " Motorcycles don't grow on trees, not even for guys like Scott Sheak. "Last Friday, I got the okay from the wife," said Sheak about paying full retail for his new Honda CRF450R. "I was thinking about getting one and i finally came to the decision. 'I want one. I want one, Erica.' 'Well, you can go get one.' But I never told her the price. So I went and bought it and I was like, 'Wowl' because I didn't really know the price either. I told her, 'Babe, that thing was expensive.' She said, 'How much.' I said, '$7500.' She said, 'What? You didn't tell me that!'" Coincidentally, Sheak will try to payoff the new machine in 2002 by racing the first four 250cc Supercross races, and then the' 25cc East followed by the' 25cc Nationals.
