CMA North MX Series

DIXON, CA, OCT. 28
rik Swan got off to a good start in
the five-event CMA O'Neal Fall
Championship Series for Northern
California riders by sweeping both of
his classes on his Yamaha YZ.
Swan's first moto was in the 125cc
Intermediate class, in which he only
had to face off with one other rider,
and that was Danny Harris, aboard a
potent CR Honda. To make the moto
a little more interesting, these two
Intermediate-class riders shared the
start gate with 12 very eager 125cc
Novice riders. Swan put everyone
behind him before the first corner and
never let up his torrid pace until the
checkers. Harris kept the Novice riders at bay until about lap three, when
two of the hottest put him back in
fourth overall on the race track.
Those two - Yamaha rider Trevor
Doniak and Kawasaki jockey Bob
Challburg - went on to finish first and
second, respectively, in the Novice
class results. Harris hung on and finished a distant second to Swan.
Moto two was almost a repeat of
moto one, except that Harris finished
far stronger than his first-moto performance.
When the 250cc Intermediate class
rolled to the start line, there were four
riders contesting. At the gate's drop,
Swan duplicated his earlier starting
successes and burst into the lead. For
two laps, it appeared the late-moto
challenge would come from Hondamounted Matt Femandes, but on lap
three Swan increased his lead measurably. Fernandes either began to
tire or Kawasaki jockey Mike Dickerson began to find better lines, for by
lap three the order was Swan, Dickerson, Fernandes and Honda-mounted
Harris. This order remained the same
until the checkers flew.
In moto two, the field was narrowed by the absence of Dickerson.
Again, Swan pulled off an excellent
holeshot and was never headed. This
time, Fernandes dug down within
himself and kept up the pace to finish
behind Swan and therefore take second overall for the day in this class.
Harris rode to third place in this
moto.
In other racing action, the most
populous race was the combined Pee
Wee 50cc contest, in which 13 total
riders gated for the start. Nine of the
starters were contesting the SOcc (7-8)
class, while three were in the up-tobut-not-quite- 7 -years-of-age class.

The sole entry in the 50cc First-Timer
category was minuscule mite Steven
Lackey, whose first name is practically longer than he is tall, and whose
last name is legend. Lackey had a
really good time; he fell off only once,
but he was picked up by a corner
worker and planted back in the saddle for more action. He finished both
motos, to good applause.
The real attention grabber was
Kyle Tigert, who blitzed the starts on
a lightning-fast Cobra machine. He
left everyone in his wake and was
getting air time over the tabletop
jumps as if he were on a 125 instead
of a 50!
If at first it was stage fright, or perhaps unfamiliarity with the demanding Argyll course, that was holding
back Robert Wilson, on his strongrunning KTM, he did turn in a really
fine late-moto charge to finish a
respectable second place in moto
one. A fair distance back, the young
Brian Yorton brought his KTM home
in third place.
In the second moto, Tigert again
leaped to an immediate lead - a "No
Fear" future National champ in the
making. In this moto, Wilson was far
stronger and kept it closer for most of
the four laps. The finish order for the
second moto was a duplicate of the
first. The Cobra-mounted Tigert
topped four KTM riders - behind him
were Wilson, Yorton, Jordan Hausmann and Payton Osborne.
