Cedar RIcewIylClull MX Fall M8t1cr1SS Series ReIHl! 3: Us Vega Meter SpeedwBY Rodriguez Races to Win By DICK GOODWIN LAS VEGAS, NV, OCT. 20 ttendance was good and the competition level high as round three of the Cedar Raceway/Club MX Fall Motocross Series exploded into action at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Suzuki-mounted Cameron Rodriguez, competing in the tough and spirited 85cc Novice division, ground out a hard-earned overall victory over some heavy hitters with an impressive display of racing. Fox/FMF /RK/Excel/Michelinbacked hotshoe Jeagher laFountaine led all the Novices as the combined 85cc Intermediate/Novice race got under way. Prince Kapahulehua was right on his back fender. Further back, Rodriguez began to mount a charge, moving through the field to eventually take second Novice away from Kapahulehua, who retaliated, moving Cameron back to third. Rodriguez came back to hound Kapahulehua in the latter stages of the race. While A 44 NOVEMBER 28, 2001 • a U a I LaFountaine was flying out in front of the Novices, Rodriguez made the pass for second and, although laFountaine won the race handily, Cameron's solid second put him in a position to shoot for the overall. LaFountaine claimed lead Novice again, with Rodriguez and KapahuJehua just behind him, as race two got under way. Rodriguez made a quick move on Kapahulehua and then surprised LaFountaine by working past him at the end of the first lap. Once in front, Rodriguez stretched his lead. Kapahulehua went down; LaFountaine maintained a solid margin over Brodie Humphries and Timothy Kerr. Rodriguez finished off the race in style, and his second-moto victory sewed up the overall 85cc Novice title. LaFountaine had to settle for second in the moto and second overall, leading Kapahulehua, Kerr and Alex Matteson in the final results. To cap off a pretty good day for the Rodriguez family, Cameron's little brother Mason Rodriguez took on the n • _ s • 50cc (4-6) Novice division and rolled snake eyes to dominate his class. Things got a little wild in the combined Big Bike Open/250cc Novice race. Kappy Kealamakia and John Stafford whaled on each other, with a little bit of Michael Parker thrown into the mix just to keep things stirred up in the Big Bike portion. Zac Humphries blasted off the line to lead Parker and Stafford as race one got off with a bang. Kealamakia came on quickly and, as Stafford scrambled to the point in the back section, Kappy battled his way into second. While Stafford and Kealamakia went at each other, Parker fought through to keep an eye on things in a close third place. Battling bar to bar throughout the race, Stafford was able to survive the passand-repass situations to edge KeaJamakia at the checkers. Parker was a solid third. Parker started the second half off right, leading Chris Champlin and Humphries out onto the course. Kealamakia quickly muscled past everyone to grab the lead. Stafford also came up to complete a Parker sandwich at the half-lap mark. Kealamakia had it pegged, but he couldn't shake Parker, while Stafford, in third, was having trouble holding on to the leaders. Kealamakia came storming home just ahead of Parker to win round two and capture the overall Big Bike Open crown. Stafford crossed in a lonely third, but it was just enough to displace Parker for second overall. Chad Geib and Justin Fraughton followed in the final results. eN Us v SIIII 1.8)1 lasV N. . .
