Over The Hill Gang National Series Final Round: Glen Helen Raceway Park STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHRIS SAN CHIRICO SAN BERNARDINO, CA, OCT. 27-28 ith speed and a little help from the competition, Craig Davis took the overall victory at the fourth and final round of the Over The Hill Gang National Series at the worldfamous Glen Helen Raceway Park. The national track was prepped to perfection, as more than 300 Vets set out to settle the "who's who" of the Over The Hill Gang. The modified track layout was well-received by the riders. The addition of a whoop section, a nearly vertical hill and a double-slalom-style berm at the end of the finish-line straight made for excellent passing opportunities and exciting bar-to-bar action. The Pro-class purse was pa id per moto finish, with the overall standing based on all four motos. John Burr/Troy Lee Designs/Pro Circuitbacked Terry Fowler dominated Saturday's moto action. Fowler got his big YZ thumper out to early leads. Barnett/Kenda/Shock Therapy/No Toil-backed Davis did his best to battle with Fowler on a borrowed CRF450R. Davis came to grips with the bike late in the moto and worked his way up to the rear of Fowler but was never able to make a pass. Fowler would go 1-1 on the day, with Davis going 2-2 and former factory rider Billy Franks going 9-3. Franks recently returned to racing after a long layoff; he showed incredible speed but was understandably off in the fitness department. On day two, the ante was upped, as perennial World Vet and FourStroke champion Doug Dubach entered the scene. Fowler and Davis gave it their best shot, but in the end Dubach's speed, style and consistent lap times were unmatchable. The White Brothers/Yamaha-sponsored "Doctor D" went 1-1 on Sunday, taking home the lion's share of the Pro purse. After placing second in moto three, Fowler opted not to race moto four - handing Davis the overall victory with a score of 2-2-3-2. Fowler held on to second overall, with Shawn Wynne putting in some consistent motos for third overall. The moto action in the Over 38 Pro class provided the most exciting racing of the weekend, with Willy Musgrave, Pete Murray and Ed Guajardo putting on a riding clinic. Pro Circuit/MXA-backed Musgrave proved to be the master, as he motored a 125 around the high-speed circuit. Musgrave's main competition was Sinsalo/Game/RG-3's Murray, on an RM250. Musgrave looked like he was riding AMA National champ Mike Brown's bike, as it soaked up the brutal Glenn Helen chop with ease, but in fact he was on a Pro Circuit-modified 125. In the fourth and final moto, Musgrave came from deep in the pack to work to the back of Murray's wheel. The overall outcome of the event would be decided by the outcome of the final moto. The duo duked it out for two laps. On the final lap, with the white flag waving, Musgrave made an aggressive but clean pass at the end of the finish-line straight to claim the lead and the overall. Ronald Wutzke had a weekend to remember, as he won all four motos for the clean sweep of the Over 45 Beginner class. Don Huddleston was almost as impressive, as he managed to garner the runner-up honors by going 2-2-2-2. The battle for third went down to the last moto, between Catherine Sanchirico, Scott Nagel and Carole Franks.
