Round 5: Oregon State Fairgrounds Forster Pavilion

amaha-mounted Ryan Leach
emerged as the day's top performer in the 250cc Pro class at
round five of the six-round Oregon
State Motocross Championship Series
with his double-moto wins at the Oregon State Fairgrounds' Forster Pavilion. KTM-mounted Washingtonian
Garrett Carter used a similar 1-1 tally
to record an overall 125cc Pro-class
win at the series' penultimate round.
Slightly more than 300 riders from
several westem states were on hand,
but only six of those riders were double-class winners. KTM-mounted Chris
Alldredge topped the Pee Wee (4-6)
and 50cc Open classes, Ross Johnson
won the 80cc (14-16) and Supermini
classes, Pete Sannan won the Before
The Hill and 125cc Junior classes,
Ken Romero won the 250cc Junior
and Over 30 Intermediate classes, Ben
Sannan won the 250cc Beginner and
Four-Stroke classes, and Ed Smith
was victorious in the Open Amateur
and Over 30 Expert classes.
Many of the day's 35 classes were
at overflow capacity, forcing qualifiers in order to facilitate the 21-rider
gate. Such was the case in the 125cc
Junior class, in which KTM-mounted
Sannan led Greg Booth and Heath
Voegele to the finish in the first of two
preliminaries from which the top six
transferred. Jim Scott, Brock Chappelle and Kyle Pachmayr filled the
top three in heat two. In the final,
Sannan demolished the competition,
much as he has all season. KTM rider
Ryan Brubeck finished second, ahead
of Scott, Bob Kivisto, Danny Costa,
Chappelle and Booth.
Blaine Snyder and Scott White
were the top performers in the two
125cc Beginner qualifiers, but in the
18-rider final, it was White's turn to
shine. The Kawasaki rider from
southern Oregon manhandled the
competition to take the win, ahead of
the KTM-mounted White, who was
Snyder's closest competition. Honda
rider Robbie Stevens, Justin Rice,
Brian Syslo and Michael Biddle filled
out the top seven.
The story was much the same in
the 80cc Beginner class. Yamahamounted Shawn O'Brien and
Kawasaki jockey James Conn clob-
Y
bered the competition in their qualifying wins, but it was Honda rider
Quinn Gorst who won the main event,
trailed by Conn and O'Brien. Jeff
Jenkins placed fourth, ahead of one
of the youngest riders in the field of
21, 10-year-old Bradley Hillman.
Leach darted out front in the first
250cc Pro moto - which ran adjoined
with the Intermediate riders - and the
rider from Albany, Oregon, retained
the position from start to finish. Joey
Mancuso, Carter, Jesse Bath and
Rory Sullivan trailed on the opening
lap. Leach put huge ground on the
field, while Intermediate Mancuso put
in a superb performance while holding down second. Bath was perhaps
the fastest rider through traffic; the
AMA National rider forged forward on
his newly acquired YZ, pulling alongside Mancuso by midway. Disaster
struck several laps later, as Bath
bailed off on one of the double jumps
and was inadvertently struck by
Carter. Bath's fine ride came to an
early end, allowing Sullivan to move
into second place in the Pro class,
behind Leach and Intermediate-class
winner Mancuso but ahead of Carter
and Jon Kauffman.
Moto two was also Leach's. The
Axo/Herb's Cycletown-backed Leach
capped off a 1- 1 sweep to net the top
money, ahead of the consistent Sullivan (2-2) and Carter (3-3). Kauffman
posted a win in the Intermediate portion, which was good for an overall
win, followed by Mancuso (1-3) and
Jack Meadows (7-2).
The day wasn't a total wash for the
Honda-mounted Mancuso, as he
would earn an overall win in the Before
The Hill Intermediate class, handily
topping both contests. Ryan
Thompson (2-3) and Randy
Pekarek (4-2) followed.
Thompson and Pekarek's
turn to shine would come
later, in the combined 125cc
Pro/Intermediate contest, after Pros
Bath and Sullivan, who shared
holeshot honors in moto one, tangled.
This allowed Thompson and Pekarek
to maintain the top positions for
much of the race. However, Pro rider
Carter separated the two riders late in
the race to finish second after not
being able to get around Thompson,
the Intermediate-class winner.
Pekarek finished third, ahead of second-placed Pro Sullivan and the
third-placed Intermediate, Yamaha
YZ250F-mounted Tyler Mockridge.
Pekarek turned the tables in moto
two, leading Thompson in the overall
category in the Intermediate portion.
Mockridge trailed Pekarek in moto
two, finishing ahead of Thompson,
Cory Gabbert and Brian Mockridge.
Overall, Pekarek (2-1) paved the
way, followed by Thompson (1-3),
Tyler Mockridge (4-2), Gabbert (3-4)
and Brian Mockridge (5-5).
In the Pro portion, Carter connected on a moto-two win to finalize his
1-1 domination, ahead of Sullivan
and Bath. Fresh off an injury that had
kept him sidelined for several
months, Bath didn't have a memorable evening, as a series of crashes
left him fifth and third overall in the
two Pro classes.
