J French rider David Vuillemin dominated the Bercy Supercross, taking victory in the three-night event in Paris France, November 8-11, Not once was the defending King of Bercy beaten, and it was a perfonmance that stamps him as possibly the greatest Bercy champion ever. With the win, the Frenchman took his third King of Bercy title. Second place went to legend Jeremy McGrath, with another American, Nick Wey, finishing third overall. Australian Chad Reed, 19, looked a sure bet to finish on the podium in Bercy until he crashed while leading one of the fmals on Sunday, ending his night. For Reed, it was a mixed weekend. He finished second overall on the first night, leading home McGrath on two occasions. Reed then finished fourth on Saturday and clocked the quickest times of the weekend around the tight Bercy track. The final night, however. dropped him out of the results. as he crashed, breaking a bone in his jaw. Despite tiredness and a collision with a lapped rider in the first main of the third and last night. Vuillemin once again dominated in Bercy. With a mid-pack start (in the first final) or a holeshot (in the second final), he won the races with the full support of the fans.. The atmosphere was incredible in the first final; when VuiJIemin lost the lead following a collision with a lapper, McGrath took the lead, but Vuillemin came back to the retake the lead and the win! Second on this third night and second overall, McGrath was the strongest rival for Vuillemin, as Reed missed this last day. He was leading the first final, but he crashed and broke a bone with his foot peg. "I am very excited about Motocrosser Shane Kelly, 18, was killed on November 10 at Perris Raceway in Perris, California, after losing control of his motorcycle over a small jump. Kelly, who was testing for the upcoming Mini Olympics at the time of the accident, is survived by his mother, sister and niece. The 21-year-old from Havana, Florida, won both the 2001 AMA EA Sports Supercross and the AMA 250 Chevy Tnucks U.S. Motocross Championships and set a slew of new records along the way. "It's definitely a dream come tnue to be nominated again for the Athlete of the Year Award," said Carmichael, who was also nominated last year. "As a kid, I never thought I'd be counted as one of the top riders in the country. Once you start racing, you get so focused that everything happens really fast and sometimes you don't get a chance to step back and enjoy your accomplishments. It's just now sinking in that I had such a special season last year. I'm training right now trying to prepare so that I can try to do as well this coming season." Carmichael finished the motocross season by parking his 250 at Steel City and winning the final 125 round to set a new record for career wins in that class. In addition, thiS season he moved from 11th to a tie for fourth on the all-time AMA 250 Motocross wins list and is now ninth on the all-time AMA Supercross wins list.
