AMA Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series
Round 1: Three Creeks Station
Allen Edges McCrea
By
DEBBIE ALLEN
GREENVlllf,KY,OCT.7
T
he AA riders at the Mid-South
Championship Winter Hare
Scrambles knew it wouldn't be an
easy race for their first round. The
AMA/Pirelli Tires/Parts Unlimited/
Moose/White Brothers-sponsored
series hosted 543 dirt bikes at Three
Creeks Station. It was a record turnout
for the 9-mile track located in
Greenville, Kentucky, and the AA riders felt the brunt of it. They battled
among themselves and sifted through
the mass of Band C riders, and P.A.
Allen had a tight battle with Mike
McCrea. Sarge's Cycles/Oakley/GPR/
Pro Action of Kentucky/FMF-backed
Allen flew on his KTM 400 EXC. On
the last lap, he took the lead away
from McCrea one last time and
claimed first place in AA and overall.
"I got a next-to-Iast start and
caught Mike Sampson [the leader of
the first lap]," said Allen. "I crashed
on the second lap and everyone
passed me, so I slowly worked my
way back until I caught up to Team
Green's Mike McCrea [the leader of
the third lap]."
After he caught him, McCrea let
l1im pass, but there was no pulling
away. They were tight for the final
two laps, swapping positions several
times, and they finished with a tie for
the fastest lap of 24:50.
"We were together every lap but
one," said the Bloomington Power
Sports/Joe Stein/IMS/Renthal/Dunlop-sponsored McCrea. "When P.A.
went down, I passed him and took my
time getting around everybody. I took
the lead after Shad Ricketts crashed
going up a hill. From that point, I
thought I had a bigger lead, and I
didn't expect him [Allen] to be there.
When someone catches me that fast,
I just let them by, because I don't
want to hold anyone up. I rode his
pace and passed him, but he took a
better line going up a last hill."
Allen, McCrea and Alan Westerfield were the only AA riders to make
the top five overall. Allen won by one
second. McCrea took second on his
KX250, and Westerfield, a first-time
AA rider, came in fourth overall.
"It wasn't as hard as I thought,"
Westerfield said. "Of course, there's a
lot more competition."
Off the AA start, eight riders
cleared the path for the rest. John
Roth snatched the holeshot.
"I led for a whole two miles [and]
then got arm pump," Roth recounted,
"so I moved to the side, because I
didn't want to hold up Sampson's or
P.A.'s quest."
Roth toughed it out, like most, and
garnered fifth place in AA and eighth
overall.
Sampson continued his lead for the
first lap, but he struggled with clutch
problems afterward. He finished in
fourth place and sixth overall.
Third place overall went to
Smith/Sidi Boots/Cycra/Wiseco/909supported Dustin Gibson, the winner
of the 250cc/Open A class. He rode
like he was on a mission and was
faster than anyone during the first two
laps. On his last lap, he pulled
through the score tent a minute and
36 seconds down from Allen.
"I really wanted to get a good
overall position," Gibson said, "but
the lappers slowed me down."
Other riders on a mission were
S&S Powersports/Suspension Works/
Stoess Racing's Billy Cooper and
Gary Hendricks, competing in the
250cc/Open A class. Cooper claimed
fifth place overall and second in
250cc/Open A, while Hendricks took
third place in 250cc/Open A. Hendricks was thankful for just being at a
race after taking a year's vacation
from racing; before he left, he was
second place in AA and fourth overall

for the Mid-South Championship during the 1999-2000 season.
"The last time I rode was last year
at this race, and my bike still has the
mud to prove it," Hendricks said.
"The first two laps, I got tired and my
arms started to pump. You can't
hardly hang on when that happens. I
was running in second place until I
was forced to slow down from a real
bad bottleneck, and Cooper got
around me. I had a lot of fun, and I
plan on riding the series."
Most of the Mid-South riders
enjoyed their race at Three Creeks
Station. The promoter, Emmett Cox,
did a great job of handling the overflow of the more than 500 competitors
who raced throughout the day. Also,
the Mid-South started three Youth
races, which had a total of 55 riders.
"I just love the Mid-South races,"
said Super Senior winner Don Rye,
who made four laps in 2:04, followed
by Patrick Jones, John Giles, Patrick
Freiburger and Larry Still.
