Northrop Makes Alamo One to Remember SPARKS, NV, OCT. 7 ave you ever stared out the window of your car, into empty fields, imagining the lines you would carve on your motocrosser if you had the chance? The people at Nevada's MXWest association obviously have. On October 7, they turned a vacant expanse of earth located across from the Alamo truck stop in Sparks into a true motocross course, site of the first-ever" Alamotocross" - the eighth round of the popular MXWest Nevada State MX Championship Series, which drew a large turnout. The schedule included a freestyle jump contest (claimed by local boy Greg Garrison), the Fast 50 four-stroke Adult World Championship (topped by Chris Gosselaar), and a Pro program with a $4000 purse that lured top riders from California and Nevada. Team Green's Jeff Northrop claimed the victories in the 125cc and 250cc Pro divisions. Don't be fooled into thinking that Northrop's sweep meant he faced H the first-ever ..Alamotocross" - round eight of the MXWest Nevada Slate Motocross Championship Series, in Sparks, Nevada. Northrop topped the 125cc and 250cc Pro contesls; neamey was third in the 250Cc Pro class and runner-up in the 125cc Pro class. 40+ MSTR: 1. Michllel Goodrich (Kaw); 2. Jonnie Deremo (KTM); 3. MXWest Nevada State Motocross Championship Series Round 8: Alamo MX Facility Bv ROBERT BEAUPRE Alamo MX Facility: Jeff Northrop (615) and Nathan Tieamey (173) battled closely throughout light competition. Notable names in the Pro classes included Gosselaar, Scott Davis, Evan Laughridge, Levi Reid, Daniel Blair, and Carson City's Nathan Tiearney_ Northrop and Tiearney proved to be the fastest and most consistent contenders throughout the day, with both of them at the front of nearly every moto. In fact, they often seemed as if they were glued together, as neither was ever capable of gaining much distance on the other. In the first 125cc Pro moto, one major competitor was knocked out early. Gosselaar, a member of next year's Factory Connection Honda team, made it to the end of the start ahead of everyone, only to lose the front end in the entry to the turn. Gosselaar limped off the track while the rest of the field went on, with the Nak Performance/MCW /FMF /Thor /Pro Action-backed Suzuki rider Tiearney at the front. Before the end of the first lap, Northrop moved his Kawasaki into the point and set the pace. Northrop never gained much distance on Tiearney, but he nevertheless claimed the moto win. Laughridge was behind Tiearney in third, followed by his fellow Suzuki rider Davis, in fourth. In the second moto, Davis scored the holeshot, with Northrop in second, and Tiearney and Laughridge following closely in third and fourth. Laughridge attempted to move past Tiearney in the turn before the finishline step-up but was forced outside by Tiearney and went down in the soft outer berm. Northrop pushed his Team Green/Pro Circuit/Fox/Scottsponsored Kawasaki past Davis and into the lead shortly after. Tiearney also found his way past Davis as the moto wore on, as did YZ250F pilot Levi Reid. The top four at the finish were Northrop, Tiearney, Reid and Davis. Laughridge completed the top five after recovering from his earlymoto troubles. The final results had Northrop on top, with a clean 1-1 score. Tiearney (2-2) got the nod for second overall, and Reid (5-3) grabbed third. The 250cc class had many of the same faces at the front. In the first moto, Northrop convincingly answered the question of whether or not he could come from behind to win. After a poor start, he passed, among others, Davis, Gosselaar and eventually the early leader, Tiearney, on his way to a hard-earned moto victory. In the second moto, though, Gosselaar found his way to the front and stayed there, making for an uneventful moto. Northrop had to settle for second, with Tiearney third after a firsttum slideout_ Laughridge was fourth. Northrop's 1-2 was good enough for the overall win. Gosselaar (4-1) was second. Tiearney (2-3) scored third_ n cue. e "We definitely tested our skill today, as fast as we were going," Northrop said after the race. "Tiearney is going so fast." "There were no slackers on this track today," Tiearney remarked. "live been training real hard for the last three months, and it's paying off. It felt good to show the SoCal guys that we're fast up north, too." Both Northrop and Tiearney noted how hard-packed the track had became by the time of the second moto. This was a factor in many of the other classes as the day rolled on. Jeston Ponciano rode his Honda to victory in the 250 Intermediate division, despite a first-turn incident in the second moto that forced him to charge from last to second on the increasingly slippery course. The 125cc Intermediate group turned out to be too large for a single division. The two resulting groups were topped by Honda-mounted Nick Jarrett and Yamaha jockey Donny Roberts. The 50cc classes ran an abbreviated version of the track, and hosted some of the fullest gates in the program. The ?5-rider 7-and-under class was won by Polini rider Lucas Jones, while the 8-and-over division was won by KTM-mounted Troy Amacker. Matt Memeo topped the 60cc (10and-over) class, and Wes Peebles piloted his YZ80 to the front of the 80cc Intermediate group.
