Webb only got to eighth, which meant fifth overall. Eric Brown had the 85cc (14-15) class under control until his bike quit. This gave the class to John Hopkins, as his 2-1 tally gave him the overall. However, Brown returned to finish second overall in the ever-competitive Supermini class. James Jackson from Monroe took the win. Taylor Futrell, Broe Tickle and Matthew Williams were also top-five runners. The 125cc and 250cc B classes were dominated by Zachary Kutschenko, who joined Neese as a double-class winner. Shipley also joined this elite club, as he took overalls in Over 30 A and Over 35 racing. eN Devll's Ridge Sanford, North carolina Resuhs:September3o, 2001 50 SHAFT: 1. Kyle Peters (Cob): 2. Eric Brown With a full lineup of races on Saturday and many Support classes on Sunday, riders have the opportunity to ride on the same track as the Pros and see just how fast they really are. The top rider this weekend was Michigan Yamaha rider Nick Wey, who won the 125cc Pro and 250cc Pro classes and finished second in the Four-Stroke National. By the way, Wey was on a YZ250F in the FourStroke event; think of what might have happened had he been on a 426! The next-smallest bike in the class he raced against was the Suzuki DR400 of Alex Rossetto. Wey is truly one of the fastest Pros in the USA, and whomever he rides for next year will truly have a future champion on their hands. KTM rider and defending FourStroke champion Kelly Smith showed why he has that big number-one on his bike. He dominated the National, and with the level of riders entered, that was no easy task. In the first moto of the Four-Stroke National, Smith got out front and led every lap for the moto win. Last year's winner, Clark Stiles, looked like he might have the speed to win again. Stiles had fellow KTM rider Brian Mason on his heals, with Wey working to reach the front. On lap three, Stiles came into the fastest corner on the track and high-sided, ending his day. Mason put on a great ride to finish second, with Wey third. Rounding out the top five were KTM rider John Penrod and Cannondale rider David Espinoza. In moto two, Smith again put his Red Bull KTM out front to stay, leading every lap for the moto and overall win. KTM rider Jeff Gibson of Ohio kept Smith honest every lap of the way. Gibson just could not get the drive he needed to make a pass, though he was close many times. Wey tried everything he could to catch them, but he looked like he just needed more power. Wey finished third for the moto and second overall, and Gibson finished third overall. Mason went down in the second corner but worked his way from dead last to eighth by moto's end, placing fifth overall. The first 250cc A moto was just crazy! Smith snared the holeshot, with Mason second and Gibson third. Gibson moved by Mason on lap two and set his sights on Smith. The two went into the bowl turn together, made contact and went down. Smith was unable to restart, which ended his moto. Gibson restarted, but he could only work his way back to 13th by moto's end. Out front, Mason had Wey hot on his heels for three laps, but Mason wouldn't give up the lead. On lap six, though, Mason came rolling into the bowl turn a little slow his KTM had given up the ghost, handing him a DNF. With Mason out of the picture, Wey put his YZ250 way out front. Dreyer Cycle/Fox/Pro Circuit rider Jeffrey Baker finished second. Local fast dude David Espinoza finished third for the moto. In moto two, Smith was again out front, with Gibson in second, Wey in third, Stiles in fourth and Mason in fifth. Everyone lined the fence to see another great show. This time, Smith and Gibson battled out front - without going down. Smith took the moto win, with Gibson second. Wey fin- ,.---,--._--"'"'"",..,...-------------, a a: ;1i \i a:: ; , '" ~ S :I: 0..
