Many of the competitors, who came from six western states and as far away as Canada for the event, felt that it was one of the tougher courses - at least in the Western swing - and easily one of the most scenk. At the top of the peak that rises high above the massive Willow Creek Motocross Park, which also includes the trials course and a modern motocross track, a panoramit view of the entire Cascade mountain range spreads all the way to Washington and southern Oregon. Paulson, who rode a BSA in his aforementioned win of the Premier Heavyweight class, had cleans in the first and third loops, while Californian Gary Davis, who competed aboard a Royal Enfield, zeroed the final circuit. "I probably should have zeroed the second loop," said Davis, a Hollywood stunt man, "but I was trying to go through too quick on an easy section and I double-dabbedl" One of the more interesting machines in attendance was an HRC Honda, a semi-works bike ridden by John Isherwood. Competing in the Support class, Isherwood finished second in class on the high-dollar machine, trailing Marty Quinn in the final tabulations, 17-24. Scott Stewart logged a win in the Modern Classic Expert class, despite a disastrous first circuit of the course, in which he tallied an unusually high 15 points while contesting the toughest of the four lines. However, Stewart came back to zero the second loop and net two points on the final loop to lead Neal Trevorrow's 9-3-9. Blake Landon, an Expert-class motocross rider, finished third in the highly competitive class via 5-4-13 scores (22). eN Willow Creek Molllcrass Parte Madras, Oregon Results: September 29, 2001 IRound 18 of 221 MORN ClSC NOV: 1. AHRMAlNorthwest Maico & cz Post-Vintage Regional MX Series Round 5: Wil ow Creek Motocross Parte Clark Clobbers 'em Bv CLAV LIGHT MADRAS, OR, SEPT. 30 Z-mounted Chris Clark clobbered the competition in the combined Post-Vintage (1975-1983) classes at the fifth round of the AHRMA/Northwest Maico f, CZ-sponsored Post-Vintage Regional Motocross Series at Willow Creek Motocross Park in central Oregon. The rider from Portland, Oregon, who normally contests the Open Sportsman Expert Vintage class, found himself competing with the newer machinery when his 1974 CZ 400 failed to meet AHRMA's Vintage motocross standards. Clark's CZ was found to be slightly over the suspension limitations, thus placing him in the Post-Vintage classification. Despite a sparse turnout (much like the National several weeks earlier at Ward Creek, Washington), the competitors got to ride a surprisingly fast, sandy track - designed by promoters Troy and Christina Neimann - which grew rougher as the day progressed. The day's largest classes were the Over 40 and Over 50 classes, which were topped by Washington's Bill Grubin (in the Over 40 Historic Novice division) and Dan Glenn (in the Over 50 Historic Novice division). While all of the riders on hand were jammed into two motos, the first being the crowded 19-rider multipleclass moto, the field was well spread C 76 NOVEMBER 14, 2001 • cue out. Clark put his CZ out front at the unleashing of the first moto - for the Historic and Gran Prix classes - and vanished en route to his Historic Over 30 Expert-class win. Included among the front-runners were CZ rider Don Matthews, Mako-mounted J.R. Cunningham, and Jim Sawtell, who was aboard a rare 1979 Kawasaki 10<250. It was all Clark, though, as Sawtell, also a top Northwest Expert rider, couldn't narrow the gap on the topranked Open-class competitor, Clark, due to a sputtering machine. "We went through five carbs yesterday," said a dejected Sawtell, the lone competitor in the Gran Prix (1978-80) class. "This high (2800 feet), bikes tend to run a bit rich, and I think we're a bit off today." Sawtell wasn't the only one hampered by blubbery engines, as the majority of the contestants on the day faced similar problems. In the Over 40 Historic Novice class, Grubin won overall, but a fall in the first moto while running near the front of the pack left him far behind the leaders at moto's end. Grubin came back to capture a win in the class in moto two for the overall, ahead of Dale Stephens, who was aboard the cleanest machine in the Post-Vintage portion, a '1983 Husqvarna. Maico rider Mark Baer, who watched as the pack thundered off in moto two without him, finished third overall. Glenn, riding one of the many .e ne_s Willow Creek Motocross Park: Malco-mounted Marvin Newton won the Gran Prix 500Cc Intermediate class at the fifth round of the AHRMAINorthwest Maico & CZ Post-Vintage Regional Motocross Series in Madras, Oregon. Husqvarna machines in attendance, got a bit of a break in the Over 50 Historic Novice class (the day's largest) when moto-one winner Eric Krask didn't start the second moto. Glenn grabbed the point position in the class and held it to the finish for an overall win on a 3-1 tally, followed by Montesa-mounted Californian John Gulliford, the second overall finisher via 2-2 consistency. Oregon's Bob DuVall went 4-3 for third. The day's final moto also featured Gran Prix and Historic contestants. Maico rider Marvin Newton manhandled the competition in both motos to capture an overall win in the Gran Prix 500cc Intermediate class. Trailing Newton were Honda riders Bill Metcalf, Scott Lawson, Jon Morgan and Husky rider Allen Wenzel. Metcalf was Newton's closest competitor in moto two, topping the Gran Prix 250cc Novice class, finishing ahead of Gran Prix 125cc Intermediate rider Morgan and Wenzel, who won the Historic 250cc Expert class after posting two come-from-behind c1asswinning rides. AHRMA's Dick Mann was in attendance, and he got a glimpse of the newly implemented Post-Vintage program - one which he hopes will break free from the regul~r Vintage (1974 and earljer) program. "It's not our intention to run these [Post- Vintage] bikes with the regular Vintage program," said the former AMA Grand National Champion. "They need to have their own deal, ride the tracks that these bikes were designed for. They were meant for rougher courses, not a scrambles-type track that the Vintage bikes run on." Ballzee Grand Championship Series Devil's Ridge Neese, Day Time at the Ridge Bv DAVID ELLER SANFORD,NC, SEPT. 30 n September 30, the Ballzee Grand Championship Series called Devil's Ridge in Sanford, North Carolina, home. The day before, riders were treated to a practice session on a well-prepared track, and on Sunday a light wind kept dust down and made for a great day or racing. O Husky's Jim Neese from nearby Julian, North Carolina, was consistent enough to earn two overall A-class victories, winning three out of six motos along the way. In 125cc A action, Yamaha of Lumberton's Jason Bryant pulled the holeshot over Performance Honda's Adam Overcash. Maryland's Aaron Day was a close third, followed by Neese and Jason Baldwin.
