Moose Western Regional Cross Country Series Round 7: Prime Time Hare Scrambles Bv Although Kreiss and Garrahan made up time at the end of the race, Zimmerman finished in the top position. Kreiss came in a close second, followed by Patrick Garrahan. Wesner finished in the fourth position but was challenged near the end of the race by Suzuki Off Road/Moose Off Road/Woodland Cycle-backed Tim Stowe, who came back from a mistake early in the race that caused him to start at the back of the pack. Finishing in sixth and seventh were KTM riders Brian Sperle and Bryce Olson, respectively. Finishing eighth was Yamaha rider and Vet-class winner John Mason. Honda riders Robert Fouts and J.R. Mason rounded out the top 10. With the victory, Zimmerman has extended his series points lead. Kreiss holds down the second position, with Wesner in third and the Garrahan brothers in fourth and fifth. Earlier in the day, Tim Vanderclown came out on top in the morning's C Vet/Senior race, and in the afternoon's C Sportsman race, Mike Napoli took top honors. eN CHRIS GHIONE AND MICHELLE LEE PHOTOS BV MICHELLE LEE SAN JOSE, CA, OCT. 5 fter a long summer, the Moose Western Regional Cross Country Series got back under way, kicking off the fall racing season with the annual running of the Prime Time Hare Scrambles outside of San Jose, California. Defending series champion Rob Zimmerman showed no signs of rust, as he managed to come away with the overall victory as the Santa Clara County Motorcycle Park played host to round seven of the AMA District 36-sanctioned series. The Timekeepers Motorcycle Club put together a challenging course, which weaved its way through eight miles of the park, using a variety of motocross tracks, single-track, and fire roads. With the area receiving no rain in the months preceding the event, the course was slick and dusty. Nearly 150 A and B riders lined up, ready to challenge the course and each other at the start of the event. At the sound of the horn, the Yamahamounted Zimmerman and KTMbacked Brian Garrahan went into the first tum side by side. Coming out of the first turn, Race Tech/Twin Air/McCoy's Specialized Motorcyclessponsored Zimmerman had the advantage, followed by Garrahan. Jumping out to a third-place start was Hayward Suzuki/White Brothers/ Moose Racing-sponsored Rod Kreiss. The battle for the lead position started right away, as Garrahan challenged Zimmerman around the motocross track that started the course, with the two swapping posi- (Above left) Rob Zimmerman was the overall winner at the Prime Time Hare Scramble.s, round seven of the Moose Western Regional Cross Country Series. At the end of the track, Zimmerman was back in front as they hit the first trail, but his lead did not last long, as Garrahan quickly retook the lead. "We got out on the trail and the first section - I came out here on Wednesday and rode out here, so I kind of know this place pretty good and he [Zimmerman] shut off," Garrahan recounted. "I shifted up a gear and flew over his head, and then I pulled out a strong lead." After getting out in front of the dust, Garrahan was able to extend his lead, but his brother Patrick was not as lucky. When the race started, his bike did not, which left him in the back of the pack. "I started way in the back and just tried to steadily move up on everyone," Patrick said. "I tried to be smart here, because there are a lot of little rocks and stuff that can bite you in the dust." By lap three, Brian Garrahan had extended his lead to more than two minutes on Zimmerman, and he appeared to be on his way to the Santa Clara Caunty Motorcycle Park San Jose. Kreiss had settled into third, and Kawasaki Team Green/ Amsoil/Faultline .suspensionbacked Craig Wesner was riding strong in fourth. The race changed on the fifth lap when the rear-wheel bearings on Brian Garrahan's bike went out. Garrahan was forced to take an extended pit stop, which put him out of contention. With Brian out of the race, the other riders took advantage. Zimmerman moved into the lead, followed by Kreiss, who never fell too far behind. Meanwhile, further back, Patrick Garrahan was moving forward, and before the end of the race he passed Wesner for the third position, and on the final lap he challenged Kreiss for second. "On the last lap, I saw Pat [Garrahan] behind me, and that was it," said Kreiss. "I had to upshift right there. I just started riding really good the last lap, and I guess I caught up to Robbie quite a bit on the last lap, but I was basically just trying to stay in front of Pat." cue I e n e _ S • NOVEMBER 14. 2001 65
