Kawasaki/Pirelli New York State Motocross Championships Broome-Tioga Sports Center STORV AND PHOTOS BV JIM P. SANDERSON BINGHAfIITON, NY, SEPT. 30 p-and-coming Kawasaki Team Green Pro Expert Paul Veracka from Bridgewater, Massachusetts, topped the 125cc Expert class and earned third overall in the 250cc Open Expert class and took home two $100 Team Green contingency awards for the top finishing 10<, above and beyond what he took home in purse winnings at the 19th annual Kawasaki/Pirelli New York State Motocross Championships. held at the Broome-Tioga Sports Center, where more than 650 motocross enthusiasts signed up to race on the technical track for another of Tom Hurd MotorSports' biggest races of the season. Former 125cc National Champion Steve Lamson of the Fast By Ferracci squad topped the 250cc Open Expert class, just ahead of upstate New York favorite Paul Carpenter. Aboard a booming KTM 520cc thumper. Carpenter managed to get the holeshot and led the entire first moto. Lamson tried all moto to get around Carpenter. but Carpenter got the firstmoto win. Lamson managed to get out front quickly in that all-important second moto and went wire to wire for the moto win and the overall with his 2-1 rides. Carpenter's 1-2 earned him the runner-up spot. and Veracka rounded out the podium via his consistent 3-3 rides. North Hampton. ew Hampshire's Paul Lamb nailed the holeshot aboard his Yamaha in the first 125cc Expert moto. Veracka and local Expert Ricky Conley trailed. By the exit of the second turn. Veracka had the point position. and he never looked back. Lamb. Dave Ginolfi. Conley and Barry Carsten followed. Veracka began to pull away by the start of lap two. Lamb was second. Tony Medrano was third. Carsten fourth and Mike Dougherty Jr. fifth. Veracka's lead was a whopping 10 seconds by the end of lap two. Lamb was still second. Carsten moved up to third. dropping Medrano to fourth. Dougherty wa~ fifth. On the following lap. Veracka continued to pull away while Carsten passed Lamb for second. Bu lap five. The moto went in the books as Ellis, Nighman. Miller. Murphy and Giantonio. Ellis earned the overall with his I-I score. Nighman took second overall via his 3-2 rides. Lamb, Ginolfi and Steve Mertens. In the final moto. Veracka once again had the lead by the second turn and never looked back. In tow were Lamb. Ginolfi. Mertens and Mike Veracka. By the end of the first lap. Paul was pulling a small four-second lead. Lamb was second. Mertens third. Ginolfi fourth and Carsten fifth. On lap two. Mertens passed Lamb for second. Ginolfi then caught Lamb off guard and made the pass for third. Carsten was fifth. When the leaders came off the National hill halfway into lap two. Paul's lead was now eight seconds, with Mertens trailing in second. Carsten moved from fifth to third. Ginolfi was fourth. Medrano passed Lamb for fifth. The top five remained unchanged on lap three. Mertens picked up the pace. reducing Veracka's lead to six seconds. but Mertens just ran out of time. and Veracka stayed out front for the moto win. Rounding out the top five were Mertens. Carsten, Ginolfi and Medrano. Veracka earned the top tier of the 125cc Expert podium with his perfect I-I score. Carsten (2-3) was the runner-up, while Mertens (5-2) earned third overall. cue I • n • _ s In the highly competitive 125cc Amateur class, qualifiers were run to reduce the field of 47 riders to 40 for the final moto. Two qualifiers were run. which allowed 18 riders to advance to the final moto. A lastchance qualifier was also run. allowing an additional four riders to advance to the final moto. In the first 125cc Amateur qualifier, Chris Spear took the moto win, followed by Jason Doyle, Thomas Addy, Brian Cook and Peter Katsoules. In the second 125cc Amateur qualifier, Gene C. Nighman came off the gate in the lead but was relegated to second by Charles Ellis and then dropped to third by Caleb Miller. The second 125cc Amateur qualifier finished as Ellis. Miller. Nighman. Brian Murphy and c.J. Talarski. Miller nailed the fmal 125cc Amateur moto holeshot but was quickly passed by KX pilot Nighman. Ellis also got around Miller to take second, dropping Miller to third. Rounding out the top five were Spear and Katsoules. Nighman and Ellis began a two-lap battle for the lead. When the leaders emerged at the top of the National hill on lap two. Ellis' Suzuki was in the point position. with Nighman trailing in second. Miller was still third. Murphy moved up to fourth and Katsoules was still fifth.
