When Keeney repeated in the second mota, he claimed his first overall of the weekend, but Villopoto still managed to out-point everyone in the series for the class championship. Sunday's 80cc (12-13) contest was another full table of racing for the spectators. The pair again went at it like a couple of boxers in the middle of the ring, slugging it out for the first-mota points. And when Villopoto triumphed, his series championship was virtually assured without a final mota. So the pressure was off, right? Wrong! Even though Keeney took the second-mota lead, Villopoto stuck right with him, and as they came to the close of the third lap, Keeney tried to use the low groove that was particularly successful for many riders on this day. In an effort to slam the door on Villopoto, Keeney dived in, but he wasn't as aggressive as he could have been coming out and Villopoto did a little sidestep and passed for the lead. Somewhere on the back side of the course, though, out of view, Villopoto erred, spilled, and dropped back by nearly 10 seconds to lose the mota. With another overall win for the day, Keeney tied ViIlopoto in first-place trophies, but the young man from Washington prevailed in the prize-payoff line. In fact, his 125cc victory came without winning a single mota on the weekend (he took three seconds and a third). and his 250cc win was based on two mota wins and a third and a fourth. Trophywise, he won Saturday's 250cc contest and was runner-up on Sunday, and he twice took second place in the 125s. Only one class had to go to the tiebreaking system to determine an overall series champion: the 80cc Beginner class. Ramsey Canham, riding a Honda to fourth place in the northern qualifiers, trailed Kody Hunderman on the FMF/NCY Yamaha by seven points as the weekend's racing began. His second-place finish behind Mad Dog Racing's Kawasaki jockey Austin Brown on Saturday pulled him to within two points as they headed into Sunday. Canham won the first mota and took the series lead when Hunderman collected only fourth-place points, but when Hunderman won the ali-important final race, Canham needed a runner-up finish to ace the championship. He got a third instead and fell into a tie for the championship but lost it in the tie breaker. Several riders won both ends of the weekend in their classes en route to series championships, indicating class domination in their efforts. These included Jonah Locks on the Thor Polini in the Pee Wee Beginner class; Brad Frace on the Overall Outlook Cobra in the Pee Wee (7-8) class; Kawasaki rider Scotty Craven in the 60cc (0-8) class; Gared Steinke, on the Thor/M&M Towing KTM, in the 60cc (9-11) class; Scott Muhlbach, on the Sierra Motorsports Honda, in the 250cc Beginner class; Kawasaki jockey Shawn Parks in the Vet Pro class; Randy Griffith, on the KCS Flight School Yamaha, in the Old-Timers Amateur class; and KTM rider William Wallace in the Four-Stroke class. Nicholas Baker won the first 80cc (7-11) mota on Saturday and was going for the lead again on the first lap of the second race when he crashed. After remounting and getting the bike refired, he was in last place, far behind the rest of the field. Up front was T.J. Lorenz, on the Yamaha he rode to a fourth place in the first mota. Baker, riding hard, got back up to ninth place at the end of lap two, seventh on lap three, sixth on lap four, and on the final lap he pulled into fourth place, breathing down the neck of the third-placed rider. But it wasn't enough; he tied with a 1-4 and settled for a secondplace trophy. Sunday, he swept. eN VET PRO: I. Shown Porks (Suz). OIT AI'I: 1. Randy Griffith (Vam); 2. Mike Todd (Vam): 3.
