Ganges Road MX Park Gonser Goes Gonzo at Pit Bike National By RUPERT X. PELLE1T SHELBY. OH. SEPT. 15 Brian Gonser of Newark. Ohio, never competed at the National level before, so coming into this most prestigious event - the seventh annual Invitational Pit Bike National, held on the farmhouse grounds of promoter Trevor Hawk - the 3D-something bank-vault technician was unsure of what to expect. Two National titles and the luscious and ludicrous trophies that accompanied the awarding of same were too much for the smiling Honda-mounted rllcer. "I just don't know what to say." Gonser gushed humbly. "I want to fIrst thank Trevor for putting on such a marvelous and wacky event. Also, I gotta thank my mechanic - me!" The Ganges Road circuit - paths cut around the back yard of Hawk's sprawling and immaculate grounds, cutting in and out of barns and twisting under the garden clothesline - left the 60 or so riders on hand both confused and excited. This "pit bike" phenomenon, which is catching on llIcross the nation - features riders mostiy competing on XR Hondas, TTR Yamahas and, lit this bizarre event, some truly wacky machinery that defy description. Riders over 18 competed on bikes generally too small for them and typically ride "way over their heads," and crashing, banging and takeout maneuvers are commonplace. While Gonser motored off on his XR1 00 to pick up two quick moto wins without incident in the 100cc class, he had to reaily work for the win in the 125cc class, as the rider known as "Fuse" was able to notch the first-moto win after an on-track 1Iltercation. At the Le Mans-style dead-engine start of moto two, spectators witnessed a perfect runand-jump technique by Gonser, and he got a great start and then fled with the win, capturing the 125cc overall with a 2-1 tally to Fuse's 1-3 score.
