Suzuki Cup Finals Champion got the holeshot, only to run over the rumble strips and onto the grass on the outside ofturn 12. The miscue allowed Yaakov and Caylor to get past for a short spell, Champion back in front on the back straight. After that it was a free-forall, the trio going at it in every corner. Champion led on the last lap, the others hard on his tail and looking for an opening. It wouldn't come in turn 10 because Champion knew to protect the line. Caylor was second 0.39 sec. back with Yaakov a close third. All three, in fact the top nine, were Suzuki SV-650-mounted. Champion didn't win Friday's C Superbike Expert because there were a few problems. The first was a run-in with another rider that sent him off the track in turn 12 on the third lap. "It damned near took my front tire off," Champion said. "I had to shut down and get off the gas." David Yaakov was out front and Champion was in pursuit. The same rider who nearly took his front wheel out low-sided in turn two as they started lap four, the rider and his machine separating.in a V formation. "When 1 came around into three, I had to check up and I went down to the esses in the grass [with two riders getting past and Yaakov escaping]." Champion drafted by Adam Coco right away and chipped away at the other, Chuck Neighoff, passing him in turn 10 on the brakes on the final lap. "I held him off at the line for second," Champion said. Yaakov won by 11.89 seconds. Arclight Suzuki's Lee Acree was another Expert with repeated success, his coming with ease. The first came in Thursday's B Superstock final where the North Carolinian rode his Suzuki GSX-R750 to victory over teammate Scott Harwell. "I was able to get into the lead pretty early," Acree said. "My teammate Scott Harwell led the first I~p and he outbroke him into the chicane. I got by in one at the start of the second lap. I opened a lead and he and I took it home from there." Valvoline EMGO Suzuki's John Haner was third. Acree won the eight-lap sprint by 8.62 seconds, which was less than what he amassed in the later C Superstock race. Acree took the lead on the backstraight in that race on his way to a 10.35-second win. "I made a pass for the lead on the back straight on the first lap and was able to open it up from there," Acree said. "Opie [Caylor] was gridded way back. He was able to get up to second, but he wasn't able to close the gap." Team Xtreme's Caylor and his Suzuki made his way from the back of the grid to take second with David Yaakov third. 12 NOVEMBER 7, 2001 • cue (Left! Bradley Champion (40) chases down David Yaakov (31) In the Expert Lightweight Twins race. Champion. even with his bike's fairing coming oft. won the race by.59 of a second. (Right) Champion leads Chuck Nelgloft (71) in C Superblke Expert. Champion ended up second in this one with Yaakov (31) taking the victory. Arclight Suzuki's Harwell earned his sprint victory in the Expert Heavyweight Twins race on Friday. From the start he had his Suzuki TL-I000 at the front with Russell Masecar and BCM's Bill St. John challenging. By the fourth lap Harwell was edging away and by the fifth it was clear the race was his to lose. At the end his margin of victory was 4.67 seconds. Harwell said the plan was to "put my head down the first lap and go. Hopefully nobody would challenge me and they didn't." St. John passed Masecar near the end of the race to take second, Masecar third, then Quick Time Sales' Bud Lawter and Bryan Bemisderfer. Michael Diener was another of the multi-win novices. His first two wins came in Thursday's SportsmanfYintage Series races. In the D Superbike Novice, Diener rode his Suzuki SV650 to a close win over a similarly mounted John Walters, with William Kendall Davis third. Diener won the eight-lap sprint by .59 of a second. Six races later he came second to Ricochet Racing's Brian Suffridge in the Formula 2 Novice event. Walters was third this time. The final win came in Friday's Lightweight Twins Novice race, run along with the Expert Lightweight Twins. He and Walters were at the front of the pack, Diener emerging as the winner by .59 of a second. William Kendall Davis was third. Diener also took a third in the Novice Lightweight twins in a race won by Brian Suffridge. Like Diener, Mark Morrow won two races, had one second, and one third, all aboard his Yamaha RD-350 and all on a busy Thursday. The winning began in the second race of the day when he beat Stanley Lipert by 1.66 seconds in the Formula RD final. Richard Lucas was third. In the Formula 500, Morrow was beaten by the Yamaha 400 of Dick Gruhn by .64 of a second, Lipert third this time. Morrow got the better of Gruhn in the Formula 2-Stroke final, with Chris Marshall second and Gruhn third. Morrow's third-place finish came in the Vintage 5 race that was won by Bill Brown with Joseph Ball second.
