Oregon State Motocross Championship Series Round 2: Willow Creek Motocross Park (Above) Nev Laborde (34) leads Rory Sullivan (372) In the second 250cc Pro moto at round two of the Oregon State Motocross Championship Series. Sullivan scored the overall 125cc and 250cc Pro victories. (Right) Devin Watson soared to the overall Four-51roke-class win in Madras, Oregon. STORV AND PHOTOS BV CLAV LIGHT MADRAS, OR, SEPT. 16 usaber g - and KTM-mounted Rory Sullivan and Kawasaki rider Tyler Mockridge ruled the high desert at round two of the Oregon State Motocross Championship Series. At the new Willow Creek Motocross Park, Sullivan scored impressive 125cc and 250cc Pro-class victories, both with 1-1 sweeps. Mockridge was equally impressive, posting 125cc and Before The HilJ Intermediate wins in central Oregon. Riders from throughout the Northwest (and many from as far away as California) were on hand for the firstever race on the 1.7-mile, natural-terrain coursed designed by brothers Troy, Chris and Rick Neimann, but few were as dominant as the 18-yearold Sullivan. The first-year Pro from Estacada, Oregon, went four for four on the day in his Pro-class domination, though he did have tough competition in the 250cc Pro class from veteran Nev Laborde. Laborde led the opening laps of the first 250cc Pro-class moto, but Sullivan overtook the tiring Yamaha rider to pull away convincingly for his moto-one win. Moto two, however, was nearly a Laborde victory. Laborde, also an AA-ranked off-road rider, grabbed the lead at the drop of the gate, while Sullivan rode midpack. Laborde increased his lead with every lap, only to have Sullivan narrow the gap on the final lap. With the checkered flag in sight, Sullivan sliced to the inside of Laborde and used his Husaberg 470 to narrowly edge Laborde's Yamaha YZ426F at the finish, winning by mere inches. Sullivan landed the top money via 1-1 placings, finishing ahead of Laborde's 2-2 tallies. The thirdplaced rider, Yamaha-mounted Devin Watson, progressed through the field to stay within striking distance of the lead duo to capture the Intermediateclass win via 1-1 placings, followed by Pro Jason Staley, second-placed Intermediate Shawn Staley, and the top-placing Open-class rider, John Thayer. An overall win on the day H 70 OCTOBER 31, 2001 • cue I Curtis Sweezey, Jordan Mockridge and Byron Young waged close battles in the 80cc age-group and Supermini classes, but it was the Kawasakimounted Sweezey who slammed the competition. Sweezey trailed Mockridge to the finish in the first 80cc moto, but Mockridge crashed while running out front in moto two, and Sweezey then held the point position to the finish to cap off his first of two overall wins on the day. Sweezey and Young battled during both Supermini motos, with Sweezey edging the Honda-mounted Young to card his second overall win. Local rider Chris Anderson (3-3) finished third. Kawasaki rider Jared Ackerman jolted the competition while taking his dual 250cc Junior-class wins. Ackerman placed large ground on the competition in both motos, leaving local Yamaha rider Zack Dinsdale and Jake Oberle to squabble over the remnants. Dinsdale used a 2-2 tally to cop the second-place brass, ahead of Oberle (3-3), Barrier (4-4) and Jeremy Mickelson (6-6). A large number of 60cc entrants were on hand. Bradley Hillman won the 60cc (9-11) class, Bebo Clark won the 60cc (6-8) portion and Justin Conn was the Beginner winner. Clark was one of the few double-class winners on the day after also winning the 50/60cc Open class. eN Willow Creek Motocross Park Madras, Oregon Results: September 16, 2001 (Round 2 of 61 wouldn't elude Laborde, as he would later top the Over 30 Pro class. Sullivan had a much easier time in the 125cc Pro class, putting large ground on the competition right out of the chute in moto one and placing as much as a IS-second gap on a squabble over second place between Mockridge and Watson. Mockridge trailed Sullivan at the finish, which was good for the Intermediate-class win, with Watson (the second-placed Intermediate) and Pro rider Staley following. Moto two was also all Sullivan's. The KTM rider - who used a factorybacked Husaberg to recently place fourth overall at the Albany, Oregon, round of the AMA Western FourStroke National Series - again pounded the competition in his double-moto sweep. Staley stayed close to fellow Pro Sullivan for several laps but later dropped off the pace. Watson and Mockridge again battled for the top spot in the Intermediate class, but the outcome went in Mockridge's favor.
