Yes, Pirelli. When it comes to knobbies, you're probably more familiar with tires from Dunlop and Bridgestone, maybe even Metzeler (which is owned by Pirelli, see the Metezler Sportec M-1 sportbike tire review on the preceding pages) and Michelin, but now there's Pirelli to consider. You might not know it, but Pirelli is very serious about their motocross tires and have been a popular choice for motocross riders in Europe for quite some time. After all, the company has over 40 World Motocross Championships since the early 1980s and their most recent success includes World Championships by Mickael Pichon and Stefan Everts. Despite Pirelli's success in Europe, Pirelli isn't considered one of the knobbie giants in America, but Pirelli is trying to change all that. Recently, the people from Pirelli invited members of the motorcycling press to Dr. Huss' ranch near Lompoc, California, to sample the company's latest line of motocross tires, mainly the MT450 (intermediate to hard), MT83 (front) "mystery tire" and their 20-inch versions of their MT32 (soft) and MT450 (hard) tires. The MT83 was dubbed "mystery tire" by European journalists after witnessing the tire fitted on the front of many GP bikes no matter the con- T We recently sampled P1relll's new line ot MT motocross tires, Including the company's front 2O-lnchers, and came -.oJ Impressed. dition of the ground. The MT83 is basically designed for everything from dry and rocky to wet and soft and it did seem to work out well on the track we rode on - a track that started off a little damp and slick but soon changed to dry and loamy, although hard-packed in places. The mystery tire is also considered to be environmentally friendly, belie~e it or not. Perhaps the most interesting tire was the 20-incher MT3.2, which seemed to track well - like the 21inch "mystery tire" - on either dry or damp surfaces, while the 20-inch MT450 did, in fact, seem better-suited for the hard stuff. The MT450 rear and 20-inch MT450 front seemed like a good all-around package for more hard-packed Southern California tracks. Whether or not the Pirelli tires stuck to the ground better than tires from some of the other tire manufactures was hard to tell, considering the relatively unfamiliar track that we rode on, the rather little time that we put on each tire, and the fact that we did not have any other brand of tires to compare the Pirellis with.back-toback, but we can tell that the Pirelli tires do work well and are certainly worth checking out. For more information about the new Pirelli tires, check with your local dealer, or you can call Pirelli at 610/524-2190, or go to their Web site at www.pirellimoto.com. eN
