Malcolm Smith Adventures has announced two new eight-day dual sport rides in New Zealand's South Island in January 2002. The dates for the first ride are January 6-15, which will be lead by Malcolm Smith and Larry Toby will lead the second ride from January 1625. The first ride will begin in the capital of Wellington and end in the resort village of Queenstown. The second ride will reverse the itinerary and end in Wellington. Jim Hunter, life-long motorcyclist and BSA Gold Star wizard, died on Wednesday, October 17 in Whittier, California, after years of declining health associated with a heart condition. Bom in Texas in 1923, Hunter served in the Navy during WWJI before moving to Southern California, where he became a regular in the motorcycling sports and social scene. Hunter ran the service departments in various Southern Califomia motorcycle dealerships including Norm Reeves and LeBard 5- Underwood, but he is perhaps best known as a motorcycle racer and builder of potent BSA Gold Star engines. Hunter was a leading drag racer in the 1950s and later was among the first to ride a motorcycle to over 200 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Hunter also raced in Al'IA 0-37 Desert events, but his greatest success came in Sportsman Scrambles where he raced on bygone tracks like Prado Park, Acton and the Perris TT track, Hunter won the Al'\A 0-37 500cc number-one plate multiple times and won the National Sportsman Scrambles title twice after he was 40 years old.
