Lockhart-Phillips USA Unlimited Superbike Final Round: Daytona International Speedway the banking and out. Ashmead made a run, but Harwell had the power and won by .220 of a second. "I lost sight of him going into the chicane and lost my drive," Ashmead said. Marco Martinez moved from fourth to third on the final lap, with Byron Barbour ending up fourth. The money race was Sunday, with Harwell back on the big GSX-RI000. The race started with a bang, three riders down in the first horseshoe, Ashmead among them. It brought out a waving yellow, which caught one of the front-runners out. Hooters Suzuki's Mike Ciccotto would finish a close second on the track, but be disqualified for "multiple flag infractions" and jumping the start. The race for the lead formed up on lap four, Martinez still in front with Harwell and Ciccotto closing, and Mexican Carlos Macias, who'd been as high as second, slowing with mechanical trouble. Harwell took the lead late on the fourth lap out of NASCAR Turn Four, using the power of his 1000 to leave the 750's of Martinez and Ciccotto behind. The power would serve him well again on the final lap, Harwell holding off Ciccotto by 0.555 of a second, after Ciccotto had gotten around Martinez at the stripe. "I knew Ciccotto would be coming," Harwell said. "He passed me on the first lap. I knew I had a little motor on him. This win is emotional for me. I got hurt in this race last year. " Martinez said he "thought he was going to get it. I tried my hardest. I rode my fastest lap times. The tires started going away the last two laps and I had to conserve it." Another of the multiple expert winners was Jason Di Salvo, returning the U.S. after a season contesting the European 250cc Championship. The New Yorker took two wins, the first in Saturday's Expert Ughtweight Grand Prix, where be beat Fabweld's Greg Esser by 15.980 seconds and the second in Sunday's National Greenwood also won Sunday's Expert Middleweight Grand Prix in a romp. In the lead off the bat, Greenwood lost the 31-rider field in short order, winning by 7.038 seconds while averaging 107.338 mph. The winner of the AMA 600cc Supersport race at Loudon, Greenwood said he was using the race as practice for the F-USA Sportbike race later on Sunday afternoon. "I'm trying to get warmed up, amped up for this afternoon's Sportbike race and be there with those guys," he said. Marco Martinez stole second from Troy Green on the final lap with an outside pass on the banking while Green went low, with Jeffrey Purk a close fourth. "From the start to the end it was an awesome race," Martinez said. "It's not that bad for my first expert year," Green said after finishing third. "After the third or fourth lap, I was happy to finish the race. There was a lot of carnage around me. I really, really didn't want to lead out of the chicane, but neither of these guys wanted to go by me." Harwell's first win came late on Saturday in the Expert Unlimited Supersport race. In that one he rode the Arclight Suzuki GSX-RI000 to a 2.410 sec. win over the 750 Suzukis of Anthony Fania and Christopher Rankin. Harwell's average speed of 109.651 mph would be his fastest of the weekend, until his final sprint win on Sunday morning. Between the two he did business in the Expert Heavyweight Supersport race. Starting from the ninth row, Harwell wasn't really a factor until the third lap. By then Eric Wood was in the lead with John Ashmead second. Then Wood tucked the front end in the West End Horseshoe and Ashmead was briefly in the lead, soon to be overtaken by Harwell. The pair swapped again on the banking and in the infield, Harwell taking the lead in the East End Horseshoe, Ashmead back in front onto the banking with Harwell into the lead into Road Race Series 250 GP, again beating Esser, this time by 19.720 seconds. Saturday's race was faster, the average speed 105.638 mph, though Di Salvo was hoping Sunday would be faster. "I'm pretty confident I can drop my time by a second and a half, two seconds by the time we leave here this weekend," he said. But after Sunday's race, he said the faster lap times "just wasn't happening." After watching him disappear two races in a row, Esser said, "I didn't see him after the start. That thing's a missile and he's riding good." CN a.ytou InlIImm_1 Speedway O'yt8.......,F...... Ilaulb: lJctaber 19-21, 2801 AMATEUR OTO: 1. Giovanni Rojes (Suz); 2. Tomas Beauchiero (Suz): 3.
