Dutch Sport Parte Todd DeHoop (10) leads eventual winner Nick Wey (23) and the rest of
the pack In the $Extrerne Money moto In Bloomingdale, Michigan.
"I nailed the start and thought I had the
holeshot but hit a neutral shift," Gaylord reported. "That was the start of a bad moto for me."
Back up front. DeHoop was fending off the
advances of Wey. The Yamaha of Troymounted Wey got by in the sand switchbacks.
and DeHoop took an inside line to get back
beside Wey, but Wey powered back by. Wey
then opened up a small lead and increased
that margin on each lap all the way to the
checkers to claim the $1000 payday in the
$Extreme moto.
"I felt good out there," Wey stated in victory circle. "I rode a smart race, not to push it
too hard and do something stupid. This track
is greatl The staff here at Dutch really works
hard, and it's a National-caliber track. I'd like
to thank Vamaha of Troy, Fox. Bell [and] Dunlop for theIr support."
"I felt good out there." DeHoop commented. "This is a new bike, so it's real stiff.
Thanks to Powers for the support."
John Penrod took third on his big KTM.
"I had a decent start and tried to pace
myself." Penrod said. "I possibly could have
gotten DeHoop on the final lap, but I fell. I'd
like to thank North End Cycle, who helped me
throughout the year; Pro Action; O'Neal; HInson; FMF; Blure; Milk Money [and] Championship Powersports."

liearney on Top
By ROBERT BEAUPRE
WINNEMUCCA, NV, SEPT. 16
The desert town of Winnemucca, Nevada, was
the site of a solid Pro-class sweep for Carson
City's Nathan Tieamey. At the fifth round of
the MXWest Nevada State Championship
Series, the races played out under alternating
clear and cloudy skles, along with occasional
showers. The unsteady weather did little to
dampen the spirits of the racers, who filled a
full 18-race program that lasted until sundown.
In the Pro classes, there was a $1500 purse
up for grabs. and the 125cc competition fea·
tured an added twist. Loretta Lynn's mlnicycle
champ Jimmy Nelson of Battle Mountain,
Nevada, showed up, riding a new VZI25 as a
125cc Intermediate entrant. Realizlng that Pro
favorite TIeamey and top amateur Nelson would
be en exciting match-up, the race organizers
scheduled the Intermediate and Pro classes
together, as the first race on the schedule.
In the first moto. Nelson placed his Thousand Oaks Vamaha/FMF-backed machine at
the front of the field, with the Suzuki of Tiearney right on his rear wheel. The two immediately put distance on the field, and focused the
attention of the crowd on the battle for the
lead. In anticipation, everyone wondered when
Tiearney would make his move. About
halfway through, Tieamey attempted a blockpass at the bottom of the first downhjIJ and
brought the crowd to Its feet. The pass fell
short, though, and Tiearney was unable to
make another attempt. He never fell further
than two seconds behind the hard-charging
Nelson, but it was Nelson at the finish line, fol·
lowed closely by Tiearney, then secondplaced Intermediate Jeff Klino and thirdplaced Intermediate Nick Baugh.
In the second moto, Tieamey blazed to the
front, with Nelson trailing him. Nelson was
applying pressure from the start, but Tieamey
refused to crack. The two set a blistering
pace, once again leaving the pack behind, but
as they charged the difficult, curved whoop
section near the midway point, Nelson found
himself on the ground, the victim of a highspeed slideout. With that, Tieamey set sail and
left Nelson to salvage the Intermediate victory.
They were once again followed by Vamaha
riders Kllno and Baugh.
Tieamey also claimed the 250cc Pro victory, though not without a considerabie chal·
lenge from veteran Pro Butch Stillmock, who
took both holeshots ,and held off Tieamey for
a portion of each race. He eventually gave
way to Tieamey's challenges but held on for a
strong second. Vamaha-mounted Paul Mudd
claimed third, and Honda rider Jeston Ponciano took the Intermediate victory.
In 80cc action, J.L Bitz took his Vamaha to
the Intermediate·c1ass victory with strong I-I
scores. He was followed by Kawasaki jockey
Tyler Vork in second and Vamaha rider Wess
Herring in third. Bitz also topped the second
division of the ] 25cc Junior class, aboard a
big-wheei Vamaha minicycle against the fullsized machines.

Brock Goes "Bye"
By RUPERT X. PEu.Err
DOVER, OH, SEPT. 17
With KTM/Red Bull's Brock Sellards, F&S
Suzukl's David Hill and Buckeye Cycle Supply/Fly Racewear's Thomas Kelley all competing at this star-studded affair, you just
knew the racing was going to erupt. And it did.
Sellards, the biggest star of the three New
Philadelphia riders, was easily the pre-race
favorite at round 25 of the Ohio County Fair
Motocross Championship Series, although Hill
and Kelley - both well-known in Ohio racing
circles and both incredibly talented riders would have liked nothing better than to beat
their competitor and colleague. New Philadelphia is very close to Dover on the Buckeye
map, and a couple of thousand screaming
fans were on hand to cheer on their favorite
sons as they raced on the tight, jumpy circuit.
The 125cc A Pro class held a surprise in
store. Hill took the win, ahead of secondplaced Kelley, while Sellards suffered some
mlsfortune.
"I guess Brock went down In the whoops."
Hill said later. "I took advantage of the situation and cruised on in for the win."
Sellards would allow no obstacle or rider to
displace his glory on the 250s, however. The
brilliant KTM factory rider and Ohio's fastest
current Pro shook off the pack and charged to
the win, with the fans roaring their approval. Hill
took the runner-up honors, with Kelley third.
In the Amateur classes, some future stars
flashed their stuff. Gavin "Speedy_GO Gracyk
tore up the B classes and for good measure
annihilated the 16·24 divlsion, as well. Dusting
off his Kawasakis, the amazing Dustin Freitag
swept the Supermini and Mini Senior divisions,
while Logan's Levi Kilbarger dId the same to
the 65cc and Mini Junior classes. Jared Gra·
biel rode his Kawasakl to the win in Schoolboy
competition, just ahead of Brewster's A.J. Hattery. The gifted Hattery, showing spectacular
speed, also finished second, behind Gracyk, in
the 125cc B contest. The screaming Suzukl of
Travis McQueen, the fast young flyer from
Baltic, ran third in 125cc B action and second,
behind National Amateur champ Gracyk, in
the 250cc Band 16-24 classes.

Bender Over the Rest
By SUSA!'i S. Wlll.IAN
~CH~IN,SEPT.22
Dreyer's Cycle/Silkolene/MSR/Suspension
Plus·backed Michael Bender took top honors
in the 80cc Open (12·15) and 80cc Senior
(12-15) classes at the first day of Rider
AppreCiation Weekend at Midway MX.
Bender grabbed the holeshot in the first
80cc Open (12-15) moto, just inches ahead of
Jacob Elliott and Willy Kelly. By lap two, Bender and Elliott had pulled away from Kelly, as
Elliott continued to hound Bender. By the final
lap, Bender rode with ease, as Elliott was some
distance back in second. Kelly claimed third.
In the second moto, Bender was again the
hotshoe off the gate, but Elliott quickly
opened his throttle and passed Bender for the
lead. Elliott and Bender battled throughout the
moto. On the final lap, Elliott lost control
momentarily, allowing Bender to pull beside
him on a high-speed straightway referred to as
"Herman's Highway." Bender sky-jumped past
Elliott to take the lead. Elliott again charged
for Bender but slid sideways in a tum on the
section of the track before the checkered flag.
Bender filed by the checkers for the win, with
Elliott taking second and Kelly taking third.
In the first 80cc Senior (12-15) moto, Bender quickly got into the lead, again pursued by
Elliott. Bender maintained his lead the entire
moto, with Elliott second.
In the second moto, Bender was again the
quickest off the gate and around tum one,
with Elliott in second. Elliott made a pass on
Bender early on lap one to take the lead. The
palr dueled throughout lap one, swapping the
lead back and forth. By the second lap, Bender had secured the front spot, but Elliott was
still trying to close the gap. Bender chalked up
his fourth win of the day while Elliott claimed
another second_
In the 80 Junior (7-11) class, S&S Powersportstpodium One/Suspension Works/Finishline Motorcycles' Cody Reas shot off the gate
and around turn one, with Jacob Rowland,
Steven Squire and Sean Lawhead close
behind. Rowland charged by Reas to take the
lead. Squire also filed by to move into second,
dropping Reas to third. Rowland remained in
the front posjtion throughout the moto as
SquIre, Reas and Lawhead tried to close the
distance. On the final lap, Lawhead passed
Reas for third. Rowland finished first, with
Squire second.
Reas was again the first out of the gate ill
moto two, but he didn't hold the lead long, as
Rowland quickly took charge and rode to the
win. Reas went down on the second lap. allowing Lawhead to move into second, with Squire
third. Squire pressured Lawhead on the final lap
as the pair rode side by side to the checkers,
but Lawhead retained second. Squire was third.
The highlight of the day was the four-lap
Father~Son race, in which fathers and sons
rode every other lap. There were lots of laughs
as the dads completed their laps.
"I now have a new respect for what my son
is experiencing out there," commented 60ccclass winner Jeff Cox, father of Dylan Cox.
