Coast wer~ reme:mbered in prayer at the start
of the day's activities. Riders and spectators
stood in silence for a moment and then listened as tr8ck announcer Bob Bacosa Sr.
requested a prayer for the families and victims, and for the riders on the track. Young
Sam Clark wanted this reporter to know that if
he won his reces today he was dedicating
them to those in New York and Philadelphia
who lost their lives.
The first race of the day was as exciting as
the last. Uttle James Williams Jr. and his fellow Yamaha jockey Brandon Bemardeau battled one another throughout the race for the
first position. Riding hard, Bemardeau took a
spill, and the Pee Wee 50cc Stock contest fin·
ished with Williams in front, Yamaha-mounted
Vaughn McCafferty second, and Bemardeau
third. Cobra tamer Michael Avila was first in
the Pee Wee 50cc Modified B class, and
Bemardeau was first in the A's.
The 80cc A/B race was an edge-of-your.
seat match. Yamaha rider Steve Bonsey and
Bobby Fong battled for first position in the
80cc A class, but it was Honda of
Milpitas/Cabrerra Painting-sponsored B-c1ass
rider Clark, aboard his Honda, who was in
front coming out of the second tum. Clark fell
back in the pack as the race progressed, and
Fang was in the lead, with Bonsey and Joe
Hernandez right behind him. Clark again
passed the pack and took the front position,
while Fong, Bonsey and Hernandez rode three
across. In the end, Clark crossed the line first getting his wish of dedication granted - followed by Bonsey, Fang and Hernandez.
The 60cc A winner was Anthony Fong.
Danielle Caldeira was the first B rider, and the
first 60cc C rider was Jess Garda.
Yamaha jockey Chris Canepa rode the
track like he owned it in the Open B/C race,
finishing first, with John Larson behind him
and Jermain Bacosa first in the C class. KTM
rider John Eichelbaugh was the first of the
four Vet A riders.
The MX class is always fun to watch, and it
seems to bring out some riders we don't usually see. Kenneth Holland was the first of
seven in the C class, followed by Thomas
Teny and Kerry Ade. The B-class winner was
Mike Besemer, and Manuel Jimenez was the
first A rider.
The Open A contest was very exciting, as
Anthony Giamanco got the holes hot and
Eichelbaugh and Frank Garcia battled for the
second position. Eichelbaugh secured second
and worked hard to get in front of Giamanco
only to be passed back and finish second.
Jeremy Hannah finished third when Garcia
dropped out.

As the race entered the fin. I lap, the race
was decided. Wegner went down, handing the
lead over to Parlin. It looked as though it
would be another disheartening second-place
finish for Wegner.
"When I fell, I thought that was it - another
second," Wegner said later. "Then I came up
on Parlin in the woods and he was picking
himself up off the ground. After that, I just
rode hard to the finish."
At the finish, it was Wegner earning top
honors. Parlin recovered to finish the day in
second. Dunlap crossed the line in third, once
again edging out Moose/Scotl/Amsoil-supported Corey Calkins by mere seconds.
Stevens Sport Center/Shock Therapy's Travis
Tudethout filled in the five spot.
The top Non-Expert was Notoll/Wiseco/
Smith-backed Mike Stapula, who topped the
200cc class and finished seventh overall.
In the Vet class, the racing has been tight
all season. David Allen Racing's Clint Hammerle took the early lead, followed by
MSR/Motion Pro/Sprocket Specialist-backed
Scott Curtiss and the remaining vet riders.
Hammerle forfeited the lead to Curtiss on the
second lap. Fellow contender Mark Spore was
struggling to stay off the ground. He made his
early circuits in third. Hammerle retook the
lead by passing Curtiss over a large jump. The
pass was all Hammerle needed, and he took
the checkered flag to record his sixth victory
of the season. Curtiss kept the leader honest,
coming in second. Spore recovered from
assorted problems to earn a well-deserved
third. Gas Gas rider Dave Bielec rode his
200cc mount to fourth, and Robert Presley
earned fifth-place honors.
