four motos to capture the Superminiclass win and then backed it up with a win in the Schoolboy class as well. Fitzwater has spent many race days at Birch Creek, and his knowledge of the circuit paid off. " Longtime rival Wes Gauldin was Fitzwater's main concern in the Supermini contest, as he held strong for a pair of second-place rides to Fitzwater to take the runner-up spot. Matthew Williams and Eric Brown fought it out for the final step on the podium, with Williams getting the nod with a second-moto third-place run. Fitzwater had to deal with a pair of Yamaha riders in the Schoolboy ranks, and he found the going a bit tougher. In the end, Fitzwater did come out smelling like a rose, as he fought off all comers to secure his second class overall. Jeremy Jacobs and Zachary Turner went at it for the podium and finished out the day in that order, going 2-2 and 3-3, respectively. The event did see some other double-class winners, although it was not by complete moto sweeps. David Bauer was on the pipe on his fourstroke Yamaha as he bested tbe field of 22 riders in Open/Four-Stroke Amateur racing. Bauer did turn a double-moto sweep in this class, but he was also able to take the competitive 125cc B win with a 5-1 score, so go figure. Ronnie Ling bested Triangle Cycles' Rusty Reynolds to make the second step of the podium in the Open class, while Zach Kutschenko edged out Erik Pfeiffer to take the runner-up spot to Bauer in the 125cc B contest. Greensboro, North Carolina's Mark Miller made a name for himself with a double-class day. Miller almost rode his Honda to the perfect four-moto sweep but fell short by one moto. Miller was right on time in the Over 25 C/D event aboard his CR and did cross the line both times out in front of the field, besting Eric Zinn and Kenneth Hicks. Miller was shut down, however, from completing the coveted four-moto sweep when he slipped back to second in the second outing of the Over 30 C/D class. After winning the opening moto, the overall win still went to Miller via his 1-2 score after Christopher Dillon broke Miller's win streak. Dillon won the second Over 30 C/D moto, while Kawasaki-mounted Kenneth Hicks slid in for third. _ Ilrdll:nlell .mnperts PIIrl1 1luvllIe, Vlrgl. llesalts: .Sepl8lllller lB, 2001 Ulelllld B) 50 SHAFT: 1. MA District 5 Slate Championship Series Round 5: Steef City USA Stull Stands Tall By JASON WEIGANDT DELMONT, PA, SEPT. 30 early 500 riders showed up for the AMA District 5 Pennsylvania State Championships at Steel City USA, near Delmont, Pennsylvania, many of them motivated by a chance N 76 OCTOBER 31,2001 • cue • e to race on the same track that hosted the AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. National Motocross Series just a few weeks prior to the amateur contest. The Racer Productions crew didn't let the riders down. They watered and groomed the Steel City course to near-perfection, creating a great base n __ s Steel City USA: Broc Hepler made a clean sweep of four moto wins and two overalls, in the Schoolboy and 125cc B classes, at round five of the AMA District 5 State Championship Series in Delmont, Pennsylvania. on which to attack the hilly, jumpinfested track. The rider who mifstered it best was rising superstar Gene Stull from Gibsonia, Pennsylvania. Stull . who had dominated the first 250cc B moto at Loretta Lynn's, only to crash out in the second - knew he needed to ride steadily to win at Steel City. And he did, as the Team Suzuki/Fox/Bel-Ray/Cernics.com/Works Connection rider took four convincing moto wins and two overall victories in the 125cc and 250cc A classes. The 17-year-old was easily the fastest man on the Steel City track, and he only expects to get better with experience. "Even when I have a big lead," said Stull, "I'm always trying to hit the corners harder and trying to take it to that next level." Stull had to beat some stiff competition at Steel City, but he rode away from the pack each time. In the first 125cc A moto, City Cycle's Shane Lawson scored the holeshot, but Stull knifed underneath him to take a lead he would never relinquish. As Stull pulled away, a battle for second emerged between Lawson, F&S Suzuki's William Ursie, Ohio's Brian Gerth, and AMA Grand National Cross Country contender Jim Jarrett. Jarrett, who races for the Factory Suzuki off· road team during the GNCCs, was fast, but he crashed back to ninth. Ursie applied heavy pressure on Lawson to try to take second, and in the last turn of the moto he sliced past a lapper that slowed Lawson and stole second place. Lawson made up for his loss by claiming the second-moto holeshot, while Gerth, Jarrett and Ursie all went down in the first turn. Gerth and Ursic picked themselves up and put on strong charges to finish sixth and seventh, respectfully, but Jarrett retired to the pits to wait for the 250s. Meanwhile, Stull took control of the lead and pulled away, while Lawson held on for second in the moto and overall. Ursic's sixth was good enough for third overall when combined with his runner-up ride in the first moto. Honda-mounted Brandon Bradley and Pittsburgh's Michael Barto rounded out the day's top five. In the first 250cc A moto, Stull took the holeshot over Bradley and Windber, Pennsylvania's Greg Kreinbrook. Lawson was the man on the move, though; after a bad start, he carved through the field and nabbed second at the finish, with Bradley holding on for third and Tony Waugaman in fourth. Alan Bonamo got the second-moto start, but Stull railed high outside before a steep uphill climb to take the lead. Gerth charged hard as well and moved to second, while Jarrett finished third. Another consistent fourthplace ride by Waugaman gave him second overall on the day, as Lawson had problems at the start and finished 10th, pushing him back to sixth overall. Bradley, going 3-5 on the day, finished third. "I just want to give out a big thanks to my mechanic, Jason Goheen, who had a heart transplant this week," said Stull. "Hopefully he will be back with me soon." While Stull was bringing out the broom in his classes, another top Suzuki prospect, Broc Hepler, served up a clean sweep of moto wins and overalls in the Schoolboy and 125cc B classes_ Hepler, a class champion at Loretta Lynn's and the overall winner of the FIM Junior Motocross Cup in Spain, took the boleshot and pulled away for wins in all four of his motos. "The track turned out good," said the Team Suzuki/Shift/Cernics/ PR2/Dunlop-backed Hepler. "It built
