clinch a series championship by racing only one of the final two rounds. Woods, riding the Nexus Yamaha, recovered from a first-moto second-place finish behind Honda rider Paul McPhail by winning the final two motos to record his fifth overall win in a row - the longest win streak of any regular rider currently campaigning this series. Simmons faced off against the 250cc Intermediates and placed second to Suzuki jockey Bob Zing in each round, but he did lead the more experienced Zing for all but the final lap of the third moto. Zing, by the way, has now won hjs class three weeks in a row after nUssing the series opener. Two other riders have very impressive scores and are on the verge of also clinching series victories with good showings in just one of the final two rounds. Abie Lara Jr. put his Bert's Mega Mall Kawasaki in the winner's circle for the second time in the series while increasing his lead over Honda-mounted Scott Stephens in the points battle to 31 points. Stephens, who was second this week, had won the previous two shows. Meanwhile, a third-place finish last week is the only blemish on Tyler Kezer's racing resume. He scored wins in two of his three motos over fellow Kawasaki jockey Jarrett Locp in the 60cc Beginners class for his third series triumph. Jarrett's older brother Jeff continues to dominate whenever he shows up at Competition Park. He missed the first two rounds of the current campaign and so is out of the hunt for series awards, but he did record his second win in a row on this night, as he led all 18 laps of his three motos in the Schoolboy event on an FMF Honda, edging out Bruce Marada, on the Temecula Motorsports Honda. A.J. Steinbach tried to keep pace with Locp, taking second place overall in each moto on a Turner Racing Honda and sweeping the 125cc Juniors contest, which was run concurrently but scored separately. Two classes appear to be going right down to the wire for overall honors. Robert Gutierrez and R.J. Hoch are separated by only three points in the 60cc (9-11) class after they finished second and third, respectively, this week, behind Kawasaki jockey George Jeffries, who contested the series for the first time tonight. Meanwhile, in the 125cc Juniors, Ryan Mclntyre took over the series lead from David Schueller as they placed second and fourth, respectively, behind Steinbach. IMS Honda's Mclntyre has a two-point lead over Schueller. Schueller desperately needed a Victory in the second moto, but it didn't occur, as Mcintyre again eked out a narrow triumph. Now there was only one moto to go to lock it up for Mcintyre. All he had to do was ride to finish second, and he'd clinch the title. From the drop of the gate, Mcintyre had the lead - but he suddenly crashed on lap three. Schueller went on to win, with Mcintyre notching a DNF. In most events, this would have cost him the win and the series champi. onship. However, Competition Park does not record DNFs. Hence, Mcintyre was credited with finishing second in the two-rider class, and a 1-1-2 tally defeated Schueller's 2-2-1 score. The championship was decided by that close a margin. In the same event, the 125cc Beginners also had a share of heartbreak in the final moto. Brandon LeMaster, on the LeMaster Grading Yamaha, won the first moto, with Yamaha-mounted Darin Hawks second. They reversed the order in the second, so the final round would be the showdown. A terrible start left LeMaster totally out of contention, especially when he was lapped late in the race by Jeff Locp, leaving Hawks the only Beginner on the lead lap when the checkered flag appeared. Loop's younger brother Jarrett came back from disappointment in recent weeks, when he had been finishing second to series champion Tyler Kezer in the 65cc Beginner class. This week, he finally reversed the results and won all three motos! The battle was Locp's, but the war still went to Kezer. Riders who did race on this night and clinched championships included Kawasaki jockey Robert Gutierrez, who won the 60cc (9- 11) class; Kawasaki rider Jeff Worthing, who was the 100cc Beginner winner; Yamaha pilot Steve Gonzales, who placed third in the 125cc Beginner class; and Kawasaki rider Abie Lara Jr., who was the 250cc Beginner runner-up. Competition Park It's Mcintyre's Title By One Point By JOHN BEnlEA SAN JACINTO, CA, SEPT. 7 The Zingg Graphics Friday Night Motocross Series came to an end, with many of the classes virtually wrapped up, so many of the riders claimed their titles while absent from the lineup. However, there was still one najl· biter that went down to the wire. With only two points separating Race Tech Honda's Ryan Mcintyre and Bert's Mega Mall Yamaha's David Schueller in the 125cc Junior class, all three motos were very important, as a win by Schueller overall couid steal the series away from Mcintyre by a single point. In the first moto, Schoolboy rider Jeff Loop propelled his No Fear Honda into the lead and began his typical pull-away from the rest of the field. Mcintyre quickly took the Junior lead, and Schueller stuck to his tail, hoping for a mistake. The six laps passed quickly, and Mcintyre scored the round-one win. 82 OCTOBER 24, 2001 • c u e I • Results 60 (9-11), ........ G.-... (KTII). 65 BEQ: 1. Jarrett Loop (tulw); 2. ' ' 'anI Osteen Keen on Winning By BOB ALLOY VICTORVILLE, CA, SEPT. 8 The rider tumout at Victorville was good, with 66 ROTMXers rolling out with lots of power and great expectations. Once again, ROTMX had another great day of moto excitement and surprises. In the Master A class, Andrew Jefferson set a pace that couldn't be matched. His two lightning-fast moto wins earned him top honors. Gene Dickinson's fast speed, stamina and smarts were an unbeatable combination in the first Over 40 Expert moto. His win was so impressive, he was promoted into the Master B class. Chris Cumbo started in second and keep it to the checkers to fill the runner-up slot. In moto two, Cumbo had to contend with Terry Tate in moto two· which is not an easy thing to do, but Cumbo stood his ground and came out the winner. Tate followed him in. Lyle Sweeter started out with the early Over 50 Expert lead but didn't finish there. Things began to unravel for Sweeter after he gassed the double and crashed badly, culminating in a DNF. George Spearing was the top gun, taking both moto wins in true Pro style. Jim McConnell was also back in the groove with his two fast and skillfully raced secondplace finishes. Jim Williams definitely had his Kawasaki fine-tuned to take the Over 40 Amateur win. He took the early lead in moto one and just kept that throttle open on each and every lap, right to the finish. John Timmermans was successful in maneuvering past a fast Ted Jenkins on the very last lap and snatched up second. Larry Fisher's holeshot at the beginning of moto two began a series of right moves that brought about his first-place victory. A bad n e _ s Rainbow Canyon Ranch Motocross Park: Branden Brown won the Pee Wee Stock and Open classes in Elgin, Nevada. start held back Williams somewhat but he soon ripped through traffic and managed to capture second place, which was good for the overall. In the Amateur Over 50 contest, Cleyon Locnsfoot, riding a KLX four-stroke Kawasaki by Stroker, powered to two moto wins. Chuck Woody collected second, followed by Ron Tuzinsky in third and Barry Simon in fourth. Tuzinsky was good for second place the second time out. He was followed by Simon and a fast-moving Ken Beach, who started out last in the pack but muscled his way forward to finish fourth. Eric Alloy was up and running for a holeshot start and led his fellow Novice Over 40 riders for three laps until he collided with Joe Osteen. This was Fred Bartlett's opportunity to take over - which he did, for the win. Osteen hung in for second, and Alloy scored third. Bartlett took the early lead and ruled ,!,oto two until Alloy overtook him on lap three. However, Osteen passed again and made it last as he chalked up yet another a win. Alloy chased him in. Novice Over 50 rider Ed Rodzach likes sandy tracks, and he wasn't disappointed with his two powerful first-place finishes. Tom Smith was good for two second-place finishes. Results NOV 40..: 1. Rainbow Canyon Ranch Motocross Park Goodwin Conquers the Canyon By DICK GooDWIN ELGIN, NV, SEPT. 8 Maxima/Thousand Oaks-sponsored sensation Ronnie Goodwin was up to the mark at Rainbow Canyon Motocross on Saturday, September 8, scoring double moto wins in both the Junior Cycle and Minicycle ranks. The combined 80cc race was the toughest. with some fast riders in two age groups competing. Goodwin, racing in the up-to-13 division, went side by side with 80cc (14-16) fast guy Anthony Hart through the first tum, each looking for the holeshot - until Hart took an off-track excursion through the weeds. BR/PRO-X/Motohead's Clay Cutler was racing hard in second, but Goodwin kept the hammer down and opened up some daylight between them. Hart got back on the track and mounted a furious charge toward the front, but he had a lot of real estate to make up. Goodwin blew through the checkers with a sizable lead on Cutler to finish off race one. Goodwin blasted his Kawasaki off the line to lead Cutler and Hart up the hill as moto two got under way. Hart was on the gas and quickly passed Cutler to challenge Goodwin for the lead. He made the pass for first in the back section and was ripping up the track until sliding out midrace, allowing Goodwin to retake the point. Goodwin stormed home with race win number two to take the overall 80cc (7-13) class trophy, while the steady racing of Trent Scacco would earn him second overall, ahead of Cutler and Timothy Kerr. Overton, Nevada's Jacob Jones took advantage of Hart's misfortunes to claim the 80cc (14-16) crown. The 60cc class was a lot easier for Goodwin, as he got the holeshot in both motos on his way to the overall. Another hot racer on Saturday was Pee Wee powerhouse Branden Brown. The Polinisponsored speedster ran away from his competition with two wire-to-wire wins. He led the Pee Wees off the gate each time out and romped home with big leads in both races to claim the Pee Wee trophy. Dalton David came from behind to edge Jessee Brown for second overall. Some other class winners included Brian Lopez in the 250cc Novice class, KTis Higdon in the 125cc Novice class, and the father-andson duo of Matt and Mark Hermann: Dad Matt took the measure of the Over 40 Vet class, while Mark topped the 125cc Intermediates. Honda-mounted Josh Taylor was the overall winner in the combined Pro class. Results P/W STK: I. Brenden Brown (Pol); 2. Dalton Davis (Pol); 3. Jessee Brown (Pol), P/W OPEN: I. B~ Brown (Pol); 2.
