Missouri Hare Scrambles Championship Round 12 Leivan's M.O. By FRANK LEIVAN SEDAUA, /1\0, SEPT. 9 or the second Missouri Hare Scrambles Championship event in a row, 10 seconds separated the top three riders at the finish. After finishing third at the prior race, SCR/Yamaha-backed Steve Leivan rebounded with a last-lap pass and crossed the finish line in first place his usual modus operandi. Finishing in the runner-up position for the second time in a row was Aaron Shaw. The Yamaha rider grabbed the holeshot and immediately started to walk away from the field, leading for 45.5 miles of the 46-mile race. Just before the finish, the pressure got to Shaw and he missed an inside line, opening the door for Leivan to slip through and claim his ninth victory of the year. Third overall on the day went to Brandon Forrester on his Factory Con necti 0 n /IMSj Sin is a I 0 /Tw i n Ajr/Devol-backed KX250. The 17year-old rider was a contender all day and was instrumental in helping Leivan run down Shaw. The 9.2 miles of trail laid out by David Von Holten for round 12 of the series had a bit of everything, and the course conditions were nearly perfect. There was a good portion of technical single-track, field blasts, high-speed creeks, and a small mudhole. With Shaw taking the lead, the remaining 12 AA riders jockeyed for position. Doug Stone gUided his CR250 into second, with Ryan Wuebbeling and Chris Thiele off to good starts. Further back, Forrester and Leivan argued over eighth, with Leivan getting the nod, though only briefly. As Leivan hammered through the creek whoops, he swapped violently and into Forrester's path. With nowhere to go, Forrester hit Leivan at a nearly 90-degree angle and somehow knocked the WR426F rider back into shape, with neither rider going down. Midway through the first of five laps, Shaw had opened a gap on the field. Wuebbeling was leading a pack of eight riders, and when the KTM rider blew past a turn and onto an oid trail, the pack followed him. It was mass confusion at that point, with riders scrambling to find the trail. The beneficiary of the situation was Leivan, who noticed the mistake and got back onto the trail at the head of that pack. At that point, Leivan thought he had taken the lead.
