Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles Series Round 8: Rattlesnake Hare Scrambles Greer Tames the Rattlesnake By The two riders' handlebars were side by side in a struggle to take second until a lapper sitting on the trail got in Edmondson's way. Edmondson went down, and Morrison went on to the scoring tent to take second. Edmondson recovered in time to take third. In the 200cc A class, Motorcycles & More/Woods Heating-sponsored KTM rider Chance Baker took the lead on the race track. However, B'aker overshot a turn and nailed a log, which sent him over the bars. Yamaha rider Chris Cooper took over the lead, and Baker recovered to chase after him. Meanwhile, Pro Class Cycles/Cosmic Gear/Factory Connection-backed Yamaha rider Brian Morgan had worked his way through the pack to chase after them in third. On the third lap, Baker took a line into some nastiness while Morgan took a smoother line, giving Morgan the opportunity to go after Cooper. Morgan whizzed by Cooper at a gas stop to take the lead. ' Morgan was later asked about Cooper's winning pass. "In the fourth lap, Chris and I were on this fast fire road," Morgan commented. "I braked before he did, so he got by me. I guess you can call it 'brotherly love. '" Cooper rode flawlessly until his bike ran out of gas in the last turn before the scoring tent. Cooper pushed his bike across the finish line to take the win. Morgan lost compression on the last part of the last lap, letting Baker by. Baker took second at the finish and Morgan limped over the line to take third. In the 250cc A class, Steve's Performance-sponsored Kawasaki rider Ashley Hall took the holeshot, but GoRace-backed Travis Jones blew by him on the last corner of the racetrack. Hall returned the favor and got HEATHER GREER WYTHEVILlE, VA, SEPT_ 9 or those riders who like a challenging and technical course, the Rattlesnake does not disappoint. Situated in steep terrain, much of it scarred by intense logging, the Rattlesnake course is a mix of sick, twisted, tight downhills, rutted creek crossings, gO-degree off-cambers, and superfast logging roads. Even the fast logging roads were technical for those who found themselves in a cloud behind another rider, since the roads were covered in a dust so fine that it was like baby powder - only it didn't smell as good. Regardless, the race attracted 225 riders, who took the challenge of the Rattlesnake on a bright, crisp latesummer day. Casey Cycle City/Pirelli/EBCsponsored Yamaha rider Jason Greer took the GoRace! Holeshot Award, beating the AA class around the dirt track oval. On the second lap, Greer got hung up with a lapped rider on a gnarly uphill but recovered quickly to stay ahead of the second-placed rider, Gas Gas/Alco/Answer-sponsored Daniel Morrison. "My Factory Connection suspension smoothed out a lot of the rough stuff," said Greer. "We also switched tires before the race, which helped me hook up a lot better. Plus, during the week, my wife forces me to get up off the coach and go running, and this really helped my endurance." Greer kept stretching his lead throughout the whole race to come in five minutes ahead of Morrison for the overall. Morrison was unchallenged for second position until the last lap, when Scott/MSR/Tri City-sponsored KTM rider Stephen Edmondson caught him in some lapped traffic. F 74 OCTOBER 24, 2001 • cue • • n e _ 55 past Jones on the uphill off of the track. At the top of the hill, Hall went flying past a left-hand turn and crashed, and Jones took over the lead. Hall caught Jones and the two riders diced it up on the second lap. On the third lap, Jones got by Hall and turned up the throttle to set a lightning-fast pace to take the class win and fourth overall. Hall came in a minute and a half behind Jones to take second. Honda rider Brian Thompson rode a consistent race to take third. Motor Imports-sponsored Danny Morrison took off of the line first but was passed by Yamaha rider Justin Stone in the first turn on the dirt track oval. Stone missed a turn in a tricky section, slid out and got tangled in a bunch of logs, putting him out of action for more than five minutes. While Stone was trying to get untangled, Morrison took over the lead, with White Brothers/Fredericksburg Motorsports/Acerbis-backed Yamaha rider Jeff Solinger right behind him. Morrison and Solinger went back and forth throughout the race, with Morrison coming out on top at the end. Solinger came through the barrels a minute behind Morrison in second. Meanwhile, Stone worked his way through the pack to come in a mere 16 seconds behind Solinger to take third_ When asked how he picked up those lost minutes, Stone said," I just rode way over my head to catch up."
