The Hailwood Cup Silverstone Remembering Mike By HENRI-MICHEL LEURETTE 5~VER5TONE,ENGLAND,AaG.27 T he British Historic Festival was held at Silverstone this year with the classic automobile event, including for the first time ever a classic motorcycle event - the highlight of which was the Mike Hailwood Memorial Trophy, organized by Brit Allan Robinson, the TT Riders Association secretary and organizer of the vintage events on the Isle of Man. The event was to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the road accident in which Hailwood and his daughter Michelle lost their lives. Among the trophy presenters were World Champions Jackie Stewart and Nigel Mansell, and Hailwood's widow, Pauline. For this event, six American Classic Bike racers crossed the Atlantic. Gary Nixon, who was a friend of Hailwood's, came with Mark McGrew's M3 Racing USA team, for whom he raced to third place at this year's DaytonalAHRMA Classic Formula 750 races. Other M3 Racing Team riders were Adam Popp (two-time AHRMA Formula 750 Champion) and John Staska (AHRMA BOT II and III Champion). Nixon rode a 1971 Triumph 3, John and Adam their CR750 Honda fours, Jon Schultz a 1972 XRTT Harley, Bob Goodpaster a 1968 750cc Norton, and Pat Moroney - a man who some people won't recognize as an American rider (but, man, is he quick!) - was on a Trident. Motojournalist Mitch Boehm also came over to Silverstone with a CB750, but mechanical problems that have plagued this bike from its conception continued to haunt him. In addition, Spanish rider Francisco Catrain (on a BSA Rocket 3) and Sweden's Hasse Gustafson (on a Ducati 748 Y-two) came to challenge the British riders. The Trophy race event was held on three sun-filled days, and Dave Hailwood, Mike's son, led the warmup laps on the BSA Rocket 3 his father rode at Daytona in 1971. David, 29, made his racing debut in Estoril, Portugal, in May, riding a Ducati MH replica and finishing 11 th - just like his father did in his first race at Oulton Park in 1957. _ Silverstone Silverstone, England Results: August 27, 2001 F-750 RACE 1: 1. Georgia/Alabama Championship Series Round 9: Monster Mountain Motocross Lundy Levels the Mountain By STEVE AND PEGGY CORLEE TALLA55EE,AL,5EPT.2 early 300 riders were on hand as Monster Mountain, Alabama's premier outdoor motocross facility, hosted round nine of the Georgial Alabama Championship Series. Rain during the night and early-morning hours left the track in somewhat sloppy condition for practice, but Greg Cole and his Southern Dirt crew worked magic on the wet parts and by the end of the first set of motos the track was in perfect condition. Florida's Zack Lundy was the man to beat, as he put on a dazzling display of wet-riding skills to top the 125cc B class as well as the Youth class aboard his Capitol Cycles RM 125. Lundy not only topped the classes in which he was entered, he took the measure of the 125cc Pro riders in combined AlB-class motos. N 68 OCTOBER 24. 2001 0. cue •• When the gate dropped in the 125cc AlB race, YZ-mounted Josh Fincher took the lead, followed by Georgia's Cody Watford. Lundy suffered a poor start and was in seventh place as he began his charge. Unfortunately, Watford went down on the first lap, dropping from the front-runners to end up an eventual third. Lundy steadily moved forward and by lap three he had passed A rider Fincher, and he took the win by a large margin. Georgia's Josh Askew was the runner-up in the B class, and Florida's Marc Rudolph followed Fincher home in the A class. In moto two, Lundy again took the B-c1ass honors, with Watford taking second after yet another crash. Alabama's Derrick Fore took third. Fincher took top A-class honors, with Rudolph the runner-up. Lundy was not through. however, as he came back in the Youth class to n _ vv s Monster Mountain Motocross: Josh Askew (286) leads Josh Fincher (202) and eventual combined-moto winner zack Lundy (behind Fincher) into the first turn at round nine of the Georgia/Alabama Championship Series in Tallassee, Alabama. once again beat Fincher straight up. Tennessee's Torre Streifthau took third, with Alabama's Shane Mills and Georgia's Taylor Edwards rounding out the top five. Action in the larger-displacement class was intense. One of Georgia's finest homegrown Pros, Ross Johnston, swept both 250cc A motos aboard his KTM 520, besting Florida's John Lundy and Alabama's Kevin Yerby, both CR-mounted. The 250cc B-class overall went to Georgia's Josh Askew. Second place went to RM rider Jack Brooks. Secondmoto winner Watford could only manage third overall, as a first-moto problem set him back. The 250cc Cclass win went to Georgia's Chris Hall, aboard a Suzuki. The Mini ranks saw winners from nearly every state in the Southeast. Georgia's Brent Carden took top honors in the Supermini class by sweeping both motos. Georgia riders Andrew Gaddis and Charlie Evans took second and third, respectively. Another Georgia rider, Jase Lewis, topped the 85cc (9-13) group, ahead of North Carolina's Austin Stroupe. Stroupe took the win ahead of Lewis in the 85cc (7-11) group, however, with first-moto winner Colten Maynard rounding out the top three. The 85cc (12-15) win went to Florida's Cole Boutwell, who bested Evans, Carden and Gaddis to take the honors. In 65cc action, Florida's Michael McArthur topped the 65cc (7-9) group, and Georgia's Taylor Johnson swept the 65cc (10-11) group. McArthur also split moto wins with James Morris in the Preteen class, taking the overall via his secondmoto win. The Monster hosted the usual large turnout in the Yet classes, and the racing was hot in every division. The Yet Novice win went to Georgia's Martin Horns with his second-moto victory after first-moto winner Kenneth Smith did not start race two. [n the Over 25 race, the overa II went to Georgia's Tommy Martin, who chose this race to return to action after a lengthy layoff due to injuries. Martin looked fit and fast as he split moto wins with another Georgian, Mike Garrett. Martin's second-moto win sealed the deal for him. Martin came back to take two easy moto victories in the Over 30 class as well. The Over 35 win went to Florida's Chris Nelson after a sixth-place finish left first-moto winner Michael Mims out in the cold. Alabama's David Crain took his Gas Gas to the overall win in the Over 40 class, and Georgia's Benny Durrough took his 2002 KTM 250 to the Over 45 victory.
