AHRMA National Speed & Sport MX Series Round 16: Glen Helen Raceway Park colors - their striped blue shirts - were visible on the same field. The youngest rider of the day, 17year-old Anthony Loguercio, in his second year of vintage motocross, made his father proud by taking a win on his 1972 Husqvarna. "It's cool until I hit the bumpsl" he said. eN (Left) Chad Mcintosh grabbed the holeshot in the Sportsman Open Twin Expert contest and never looked back, taking a 1-1 win at round 16 of the AHRMA NatIonal Speed &. PHOTOS BY MOTO MOMMA SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 23 -d!J s always at this time of the year, Glen Helen was hot, dry and dusty. The AHRMA racers had to compete for pit room against a full crowd attending events on the other tracks. As the end of the series nears, bike attrition was very evident, with a large number of DNFs. Californians ruled the day, including such crowd-pleasers as Charlie Richardson, Ed Flanagan Jr. (the 2000 National Champion in two classes), former District 37 number-one plate holder John Rice, his daughter Tami Rice-Haase, and Bruce McDougal, a former factory rider who skyed his Penton off the jumps. David Boydstun continued his undefeated 2001 record on his way to a repeat of last year's championship in the Premier Lightweight Expert class, riding his impeccable Cotton. Boydstun has dominated this class and will pull off the hat trick to retain his number-one plate for another year. Charlie Beck was as smooth as could be on his 1971 Maico, walking away with a win in the Over 40 Expert class. Vincent Balch took second. Michael Owens raced against some "really fast guys" to pick up a third on his good-looking 1967 Husqvama. The roles were reversed in the Classic 500cc Expert contest, with Owens taking second and Beck third. Chad Mcintosh was third off the gate, and he passed Beck in the back downhill turn on the inside to take the first-place wood away from him. Mcintosh cleared the tabletop on every lap on his 1967 Triumph 500. In the first Sportsman Open Twin Expert moto, McIntosh got the holeshot on his powerful 1967 Triumph 650 and never looked back. In the second moto, he missed a shift on the start but quickly passed Clark Sumner to take the wood with 1-1 wins. Robert Haag traveled from Brookline, Massachusetts, to take home the top honors in the closest race of the day. The Sportsman 250cc intermediate class also had the largest gate, n 42 OCTOBER 17, 2001 • cue • with 11 riders. After a 20-year hiatus, Haag - a former factory support rider - made his first ride this year at Unadilla, New York. He has finished in the top three in each race in which he participated in this series. Bruce McDougal, one of the few guys who still fits into his original leathers, battled Charlie Richardson to take the wood in the Sportsman 125cc Expert class. Richardson had to settle for second, but he did take the win in the Sportsman 250cc Expert class. McDougal and Richardson battled it out again in the Classic 125cc Expert class, with the same results: McDougal was first and Richardson second. Ed Flanagan Jr. takes his racing seriously. In 100-degree heat, he walked down the straightaway in front of the gate to get a good look at the line as he prepared to compete in the Classic 125cc Expert contest. It's a good thing he isn't racing for a payn e _ is e check: His third-place finish wouldn't have bought him much. Robert "CI Bob" Borg said the track felt dry and skittery to him, and that he's never comfortable on the Glen Helen track. "I always feel like I'm falling down," Borg said. Although he did stay on his bike, he was not rewarded with a trophy for his fourth-place finish. It's very rare to see two Expert Women on the field. Tami Rice-Haase and Karen Steele showed us their stuff. In the first moto, Rice-Haase got the holeshot but slid out on the back of the track and twisted her knee. She proved that she is the craziest woman on a bike by coming back for the win in the second moto, while Steele took second. It's even more rare to see a father and daughter in the same moto. By mixing up the Over 60 Experts on the first gate and the Women Experts on the second, the distinctive Rice family PREM 500 NOV: 1. Jerry Sterrett (BSA): 2. Jim Cameron (BSA). PREM 500 INT: 1.
