Penhall's younger brother Connor was also able to take a podium position, in the 65cc (9-11) division~ Connor was able to finish an overall second, behind local favorite James Frigo Jr. In Vet action, Darin Green and Mark Moscrop went to battle. Green took the firstmoto holeshot aboard his Pro Circuit-backed Yamaha, with Moscrop was close behind_ The two immediately went to battle and gave the crowd the most exciting race of the night. Mescrop's determination lap after lap paid off, as he was able to get around Green and take the first-moto win. In the second moto, Green absconded with the holeshot and Moscrop e1gain was close behind. Green was more aware this moto of Moscrop's presence and persistence. Green kept his guard up and was able to shut down Moscrop's continual pass attempts lap after lap. Green took the moto win and overall win; Moscrop was second and Rick Boiteau third. Results SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 5 Ryan Fisher celebrated his birthday early by winning the Scratch main event at Arrowhead Speedway. He was going for the double win, but Ed Castro blew out the candles on Fisher's birthday cake by winning the Handicap main. The mayor of San Bernardino gave pro· moter Charlie Venegas a proclamation from the city for his efforts on behalf of the Pediatric speedway fans who gave so generously for the cause. Starwest Motocross Park In the first Scratch semi, Fisher just ran away. Castro settled for second. Jim Estes and Bobby Krips were headed for the Consi. In the second semi, Bobby Schwartz put together an awesome start and was off on top. Scott Brant was running a close second but couldn't find a way around. Then, as the white flag came out, the cam chain broke on Schwartz's bike; his brilliant ride was for nothing. Brant took over the lead, with Dukie Ermolenko second. Both would head for the main; Chris Manchester and Schwartz headed for the Consi. They rolled to the line to draw for starting MORENO VALLEY, CA, SEPT. 8 Chris BOnd put in two perfect motos to take the win in the 125cc Beginner class at Star~ west on Saturday night. In the first moto, Taylor Gilmore nailed the holeshot, followed by Mike Lopez and Bond. Bond was able to get by Gilmore and Lopez for the early first-lap lead. Lopez moved into second, and Brett Dimanno was hot on his trail in third. While the gap between Bond and Lopez grew, Lopez had Dimanno on his back tire. Dimanno's quest came to an end when he stalled his bike in a turn, and that allowed Lopez to get a comfortable lead. Jason Jones also made his way by Dimanno to take the last podium position. Bond cruised in for the win, followed by Lopez and Jones. Gilmore again took his Suzuki right to the front in the second moto, followed by Bond and Jones. Bond quickly worked his way into the lead position, followed by Lopez and Jones. Bond was riding conservatively this moto, concentrating on making no mistakes. Lopez stayed within striking distance, w~i1e Jones had Dimanno trying to make a pass for third. Dimanno made his move on Jones in the whoops, taking the outside line and taking over the third-place position. Bond took the win, followed by Lopez and Dimanno. In Mini action, Ryan Penhall, son of famous actor and speedway racer Bruce Penhall, had no problems proving that racing is in the positions for the Scratch main. Fisher drew the the youngest National Champion, cut a great gate and took charge of things from the getgo. Estes looked very strong but just couldn't get close enough and had to settle for second. Schwartz was third, with Krips fourth. The lowest yardage for the Handicap main was the 20, shared by Charley Cooley and Krips. Mark Adams was alone on the 30; Castro was likewise on the 40 Brant was on the 50 and Fisher was on the 60.
